Bookpleaures.com welcomes
as our guest Michael Ryan Hahn. This is Michael’s debut novel and
the first in a planned 7-part series, The Anthem of Ash &
Pistols.
He previously wrote a standalone horror novella called Children of the Storm.
He recently released an adventure podcast in the style of old radio plays called Fire Pockets.
His stories aim to weave exciting action with humor and heart, with complicated villains—probably because of his upbringing. He comes from a big ol' raucous family, and he survived a shockingly bruising (but not altogether unfun) cadre of violently delinquent Boy Scouts to become an Eagle Scout. He loves fight scenes.
He lives in Los Angeles with his wife. In his spare time, he designs custom habitats for cats.
The habitats are highly popular with the cats.

Bookpleasures.com welcomes as our guest, Rick Mater author of Six hours: Running For My Life in the Grand Canyon.
Rick is a longtime runner and Emmy-nominated TV executive living in Los Angeles.
He was a miler in high school, lettered in college, and has run the Grand Canyon twice as a cardiac patient.
A heart attack survivor, he has four stents in his left anterior descending aorta and a defibrillator implanted in the side of his chest.
Distance running saved Mater’s life. During a 2007 run, he was able to survive a heart attack brought on by a complete occlusion of the LAD (left anterior descending aorta).
His survival was due to ancillary blood vessels created by his body in response to the rigors of distance running.
This permitted enough blood to circulate around the blockage and prevent a massive fatal heart attack.
He continues to run.

The character of Mark in the novel is based loosely on Dorothy Stangle's father and Deborah Driggs grandfather.
Deborah got hooked on
performing at age seven as a figure skater and found fame in her 20s
as a model and actress. By 26, she had appeared on the cover
of Playboy three times and was chosen as the Playboy
Playmate of the Month for the March 1990 issue. In 1992, she married
Olympic gymnast Mitch Gaylord.
A decade later, she was divorced and desperately seeking a way to put food on the table.
After suffering a nervous breakdown, Deborah was forced to live with her mother, Dorothy, in a senior community in Florida. While there, she began to take daily walks—thanks to her mom’s dog—and interact with the locals. As she learned the stories and struggles of others, she no longer felt alone.
Deborah rebounded, got her life insurance license, and then took a detour into distractions to cover up how broken she was on the inside. In 2017, her whole life changed when she started the journey to face and find herself.
Gradually, she acknowledged her addiction to attention and tendency to abuse alcohol—and anything—to make herself feel better. Deborah now works as a healing coach, helping others work through their emotional trauma, get out of the victim mentality, and step into their highest self.

Bookpleasures.com welcomes as our guest, Roger Stark, author of They Called Him Marvin.
Roger Stark, by his own admission, is a reluctant writer. But there are stories that demand to be told. When we hear them, we must pick up our pen, lest we forget and the stories be lost.
Six years ago, in a quiet conversation with his friend, Marvin, he learned the tragic story of his father, a WW2 B-29 Airplane Commander, shot down over Nagoya, Japan, just months before the end of the war.
The telling of the story that evening by this half orphan was so moving and full of emotion, it compelled Roger to ask if he could write the story. The result being They Called Him Marvin.
Roger Stark’s life has been profoundly touched in so many ways by being part of documenting this sacred story. He prays that we never forget, as a people, the depth of sacrifice that was made by ordinary people like Marvin and his father and mother on our behalf.

Dr. Berry was born and raised in Minnesota, and from age eight, lived in a working class north Minneapolis neighborhood. He received a full scholarship to a Vermont boy’s boarding school where he finished grades 10 through 12.
A major in English literature was his goal as an undergraduate freshman, but after floundering and dropping in and out of mainly Macalester College over a four year period, he read Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell To Arms, and like the novel’s protagonist, the author joined an ambulance service in Minneapolis and was trained as an emergency paramedic.
He found his calling and was eventually admitted to Mayo Medical School where he graduated in 1984. He completed an Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency at St. Louis University followed by a Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship at Wayne State University. Bookpleasures.com welcomes as our guest professor, writer and artist, Kathleen Kelley Reardon.
Kathleen has published ten nonfiction books and two crime mysteries. Her debut novel, Shadow Campus, was described by Forbes as “fast-paced” and a “masterful debut.” Damned If She Does (2020), a Manhattan-based sequel described by Kirkus as “informed and searing,” was selected for their September 2020 “Great Indie Books Worth Discovering.”
Kathleen is a member of the Ireland Chapter of the International Women’s Forum. She lives in Schull, West Cork Ireland where the upcoming third book in her crime mystery trilogy takes place.
A professor of business and communication, Kathleen has published extensively in journals, magazines, and was a signature front-page blogger with Huffington Post from 2005 to 2016.
She’s also written for The Conversation, Big Think and Thrive Global.
Her classic Harvard Business Review case, “The Memo Every Woman Keeps in Her Desk,” became a reprint bestseller leading to her first trade book, They Don’t Get It, Do They?
It’s from this work about female challenges at work that Kathleen’s two crime mystery novels emerged - along with writing about sexual misconduct and developing a spectrum from mild forms of offense to egregious ones about which she was interviewed by David Brancaccio on Marketplace Morning Report.
In September, Kathleen presented online at the International Dublin Writers’ Festival “Crossing the Bridge from Nonfiction to Fiction Writing.” She described the “false dichotomy” of treating fiction and nonfiction as if in two distinct silos. Nonfiction can inform fiction - as did her nonfiction writing about challenges women face in hostile workplaces before writing her novels Shadow Campus and Damned If She Does.
Her nonfiction trade books include The Secret Handshake, It’s All Politics, The Skilled Negotiator and Comebacks at Work, which have been Amazon bestsellers.
