A very good murder
mystery but, the murder mystery got caught up in all the "Life
Coaching" and that took a lot away from the book for me.
The
Woman Who Attracted Money is the tale of Robert Chance, a former
policeman who is now a life coach. Robert gets a message
concerning one of his clients that states "So sad to have to
tell you that Tom took his own life." This was a real slap
in the face to Robert who thought that through his teachings or
coaching Tom was making progress dealing with all the pressures in
his business life and was starting to make clear and firm decisions
regarding his life. Robert is convinced that Tom's death is not
a suicide and goes to the police to try and convince the
investigating officer that this case should not be put on the
back burner and that Tom was murdered. Shortly thereafter Tom's
home is burned to the ground and it is found that it was
intentional. The ex-policeman Robert joins forces with the
detective and another client of Robert's who is very computer
literate to solve this puzzle. This is a very well thought out
plot with much suspense and a very interesting cast of characters
leading up to a big finish.
As you can tell I really
enjoyed the mystery but, as far as the life coaching is concerned,
there really was a little too much. This book is advertised as
a mystery and the mystery is why there is so much life changing
advice added to it. It does not enhance the plot at all.
(By the way, this is only my opinion.) As far as I'm concerned
Robert Chance, the life coach is suffering from Terminal
Righteousness and seem to enjoy talking down to everyone. This
includes his relationship with the police, the suspects in the crime
and the girl that is doing most of the work to solve this murder.
I would have liked to see the mystery story filled out a little more
and the life coaching taking a back seat on this one.
I'm
sure there are readers out there who enjoy the coaching and the
positive and negitive takes on everything but, it took a lot away
from the plot of the mystery, which was what the book was supposed to
be about. You got into the mystery story and then had to wait
before you could find out what happens next to go to a coaching
class. I liked the main character, but he could take a lesson
from his own book and chill out a little. I have seen, from his
book, that Mr. Chandler has written many self-help books and I really
wish him luck and success in that field. He is also a good
mystery writer but I think it would help if his talents were kept
apart a little when writing a mystery. Self-help and mystery
books are very different and maybe should stay that way.
