In the Bible it mentions in Ezekiel 47 that in the future there will be trees grown for meat, with leaves that do not fade which are used for medicine. Perhaps part of this prophecy has already come true in the use of homeopathic treatments used today. Burke Lennihan’s book, Your Natural Medicine Cabinet, is based on practical drug-free remedies for common ailments.

This two hundred and sixty-one page paperback book has a photograph of a single ginkgo leaf against a white background on the front cover. Having had her own natural health food store for sixteen years, the author wrote this handbook based on sixteen years treating patients as a holistic health professional. The book is geared mainly to those who prefer not to take pharmaceutical or prescription drugs for common health problems, using natural, homeopathic avenues for improving and maintaining one’s well-being.

The book is separated into five sections that include creating a strong foundation, drug-free remedies for common ailments, stocking a natural medicine cabinet, how to use homeopathic medicines and establishing a support system. With the drug-free remedies covering over one hundred pages, it is the main attention of the book by listing an ailment, one or two quick fixes which are generally a homeopathic tincture of some type, ongoing care suggestions of vitamins, nutrients or more homeopathic remedies, and then preventing recurrence or lifestyle support information. At the end there are acknowledgements, notes with references, and both an index of conditions and an index of recommendations.

Besides mentioning over sixty ailments with recommendations, one can learn about the safe sugars, healing herbs, flower essences for emotions, cell salts for strengthening, the proper dosage and how to read labels correctly. Next time try Arsenicum for that “nose running like a faucet” cold or traveler’s diarrhea, Ignatia for when “hearing bad news,” Calendula as an antibiotic or pain reliever, Colchicum for gout, PABA for graying hair, or Pulsatilla for thumb-sucking. The chapter on the best items for a starter set include Arnica, Arsenicum, Calendula, Gelsemium, Hypericum, Ignatia, Kali bic., Nux Vomica, and Phosphorus.

Lennihan does try to include all easily-treated illnesses in terms a layperson can understand and mentions that not all chronic diseases are discussed, suggesting to find a caring health care provider when needed. So if you are interested in getting into a more natural way to cure common sicknesses, this handbook is a good place to start.
