“Part of any good
lecture is to ensure you add humor in the right parts. You want to
make sure that people are following along, and want to emphasis your
points with metaphors that make sense. In other words, you need to
tell them a good story so it will sink in.”
Heather Wilde's deeply intriguing memoir/self-help book, Birth of a Unicorn: Six Basic Steps to Success, has raised my standards for all books of it's kind. From now on, if a memoir is not funny, inspirational, and instructional, I simply will not be satisfied! Because this one is all of those things and more.
From her time at one of the first online gaming start ups, to being one of the first members of the team that created the wildly successful app Evernote, Heather has seen a lot of personal success in her career and her personal life. But both worlds have had their ups and downs, and it is this lifetime of events that she lays out in the book.
Being both an advice book and a memoir, you'd expect 'Birth of Unicorn' to seem cluttered or long winded, but it is anything but! The prose is electric, the advice given freely but gently, and the characters (Heather's friends, family and coworkers) are interesting and fun enough to be on a T.V. show. Heather, herself, is fascinating, intelligent and quirky with just enough grace to make her writing really charming. That is despite the fact that she has had to battle depression and anxiety to get to where she is today.
Her story is so inspiring! I couldn't get enough of this book and I think that anyone reading it will feel the same! After you're done reading, make sure to take the helpful assessment in the back of the book. It really opened my eyes to what things I value the most in my life and what I can do to make sure that they are front and center.
