Kenneth Davis’ “Don’t Know Much About…” series picks up where your formal schooling left off and then runs far and wide with it. I read the history book and it filled in holes and explained things without being cut and dry figures. So I was excited to see what “Anything Else”, which I’m guessing is made up of what wasn’t able to fit in “Anything” covered. It’s a trivia game in and of itself, covering such topics as famous people, exceptional places, historic happenings and civics, holidays and traditions, everyday objects and remarkable inventions, space and the natural world, entertainment and more, which contains items that just didn’t quite fit anywhere else.

The basic set up is a short paragraph about the subject at hand that is great to toss out at social gathering when the conversation lulls:

“…in 1935 in England, Penguin Books was born to produce inexpensive, paperbound books. In America, Pocket Books – featuring a motherly kangaroo named Gertrude on the spine-followed in 1939 and a revolution in American’s reading habits began…”

And then it follows that up with a few questions about the topic, either true or false:

“During World War II, soldiers received millions of free paperbacks.”

Or just straight question and answer”

“What fashion indicator is said to predict recessions and recoveries?”

If you are a trivia junkie or have one in your life, is this a great book to add to that collection. The great thing about Davis’ books is that you don’t have to commit to the book start to finish. You can pick and choose, read a little of a lot in one sitting – it’s up to you – but you will defiantly come away with a piece of information that you never knew before.
