'Bang! The shot sounded muffled as blood throbbed through her temples and her ears, as if the assassin had unsuccessfully fired upon her again.’

What an excellent read and what a compelling look at an alternate history! 'Iron Maiden,' is certainly one of the best books that I have read in years and that is all thanks to author J.T. Maicke.

You could tell that Maicke did a lot of research to write this novel, but the historical facts never felt obtrusive or confusing. But, let me explain the plot before I get ahead of myself.

As I said, 'Iron Maiden' is an alternate history novel, but you may be wondering what that means. Basically, alternate history is a genre that asks 'what-if?' What if things in history had gone slightly differently? What if a famous historical figure had died young instead of continuing to rule?

That last question is the one that 'Iron Maiden,' asks. Or, rather, what if the Kaiser of Germany had been killed in 1910, along with his entire family and only one spinster princess was left to rule? That is the story of Christian Von Prussen, a.k.a. Christa.

Christa sees her beloved older brother killed in front of her and barely manages to escape her own assassination. Only a few days later, Christa is told that as one of the handful of living heirs left, she is the only one capable of ruling as queen. It would be a daunting situation for anyone, but Christa is perhaps the most capable woman in all of Germany and she is ready.

Or, at least she thinks that she is, but the ups and downs of being queen soon begin to make themselves known, and Christa has to defend both herself and her country with everything that she has.

This was a five-star book from the first page for me and it only got better and better as I made my way through it. A wonderful read by a wonderful author, 'Iron Maiden,' is definitely one to check out!
