Despite the title of this book being, It's Not All About You, Living with a Transsexual Spouse or Partner, author Elisabeth L. Morrissey makes it clear from the get-go that, on some level, it actually is about you. And of course, it is! After all, there are only two people in your marriage, you and your transgender partner. It is up to the two of you to figure out your next steps and whether or not you are going to stay together.
Morrissey offers a helping hand in this difficult time, by providing a stellar amount of fantastic information on the topic. She is married to a transgender woman, herself and has been an ally to the trans community since the 1980s.
In that time, she has collected a lot of information on the laws regarding the community and how they affect the everyday lives of trans people and their spouses or partners.
Morrissey imparts a lot of useful information that any couple can use to decide how they are best going to face the fact of one partner transitioning, and do so with aplomb!
A lot of tough subjects are tackled head on in this book, including the idea of your spouse or partner re-experiencing adolescence in a new gender, how best to stabilize your relationship by connecting with one another, and how to address what your children will be facing with the transition.
This was an excellent read for me and one that I will be thinking about for a long time to come. It is not only well written but it is jam packed full of real-life scenarios and sound advice.
Unfortunately, parts of
society still look down on trans people and as a result, not only
will your new spouse experience prejudice, but so will your whole
family.
This is something to consider when deciding whether or not it is best for you to stay with a spouse who has discovered that they are trans, and Morrissey's book provides a great jumping off point for that discussion.
