Set in a small town where
nothing ever goes wrong (or so everyone thinks), The Urban Boys:
Discovery of the Five Senses, by K.N. Smith is a Young Adult
thriller that is sure to be a classic in no time.
Five teenage friends, Rhee, Chase, Jordan, Alex and Kinsu all decide to take a trip to their town's forest preserve late one night, despite the fact that it is strictly off limits. No one in Danville Heights really remembers why the preserve is forbidden, however, only that for generations, there have been strange reports of weird lights and noises coming from inside. But, being impulsive teenagers, the boys choose to venture in one night to see what all of the fuss is about.
What happens when they enter the Danville Heights preserve will change their lives forever, and start them on a journey that will end up being life or death. Inside the preserve, the boys quickly spot a hovering ball of light dancing through the air. Soon, more balls of light appear and before the boys can react, the lights begin exploding. The boys are all knocked out cold and, unaware, they are dragged out of the preserve to safety by a dark stranger.
The next morning, they wake at Rhee's house, unsure of how they got there and with a host of strange new powers that mystify them. Each boy seems to have one sense that has been augmented and beefed up until they can actually sense danger with it. And they need to, as a local criminal soon finds out about their powers and decides that he wants them—and their town—for his own. With the aid of the dark stranger, the boys must fight back against the evil Druth and save themselves and Danville Heights, for good.
Smith’s world building is as spectacular as her character crafting. The story just popped of the page and kept me reading. I couldn't put it down. It was written with young adults in mind but adults will enjoy it as well. This adult certainly did! I think Discovery of the Five Senses would make and excellent movie!
