Full of atmospheric color and quippy one-liners, City Of Deadly Dreams, is anything but just another mystery.
The author, Elyse Douglas is actually a pen name for a married couple called Elyse and Douglas and after having read several of their other works, I was delighted to dive into this one.
This novel has a gruff private detective, a beautiful and down on her luck dame, and a missing young man named after the King of Rock and Roll himself. What more could you ask for in a mystery?
The protagonist, Dane Cooper is a former policeman turned P.I. who is still dealing with depression from the loss of his wife and daughter at the hands of a drunk driver. Despite this, he continues to take cases in order to keep his inner demons at bay.
One such case is the case of a missing 20-year-old man named Elvis Lipps. His father walks into his office at the beginning of the novel and changes Cooper's life forever after.
Although Elvis Lipps is old enough to be out on his own, his parents are concerned for his well being. They haven't heard from him in months and they fear that, living in the bustling metropolis of New York City, something terrible may have befallen their boy. Of course, Cooper agrees to search for Elvis and in doing so runs across a former teacher of the boy's that had been sleeping with him while he was still in high school.
As the case becomes more complicated and the mystery seems to only lead to dead ends, Cooper finds himself falling for the teacher, Darcy-Lynn Roberts and worries about the path that she might be leading him down.
An excellent noir style mystery that packs a punch and leaves you guessing, City Of Deadly Dreams is a one-of-a-kind, modern day noir style reading experience.
