Seldom will you find a book written as succinctly and logically as Tea Party Revival. You may disagree with the thesis, but it is hard to deny the logic that Dr. Leland Baker lays out in this straightforward discourse on American political philosophy. Dr. Baker’s premise is simple – read and respect the U.S. Constitution.
In seventy short pages Dr. Baker builds upon this premise leading us through a series of absurdities that this nation has embraced as fundamental to our core values. Dr. Baker addresses each of these and in all cases simply asks, “Are these powers being exercised by our representatives embodied in the Constitution?” If they are not, then dismantle the programs. If we wish to continue the programs then the constitution allows for its own modification. Propose it as an amendment and get the required three fourths of the states to ratify the measure. Only then should the federal government administer it and govern it. In all other cases, it should be hands off.
The book starts out with a list of demands from the Tea Party Revival. The list is not unduly long. It includes what can be categorized as basic, but sweeping requests such as the second item on the list, “We want the President, Congress and courts to comply with the limits in the U.S. Constitution as the highest law in the land.” There are others as well, others that are quite controversial to most but which ring with vision – “We want an audit, and then elimination, of the Federal Reserve.” And then there are some which are just common sense such as this one, “We want each bill to be read thoroughly before it is voted upon.”
From the simple one page list, Baker leads us through the seventy pages of work that centers on the notions of constitutional compliance, a smaller federal government, the reasserting of states rights, the need for lowering spending and taxes, and the need for individual rights responsibility and integrity. It is well written, reasoned, consistent, and remarkably simple in presentation, yet powerful in message. If there were one request I could make of Dr. Baker, it would be that an index be included, but that is a minor inconvenience. I found the book refreshing, enlightening, and a must read. In a period where the country most desperately needs real leadership rather than hope; a breath of fresh reasoning rather than tired ideas; Dr. Baker provides us with the opportunity to question our path and to truly consider our future.
