In this three hundred and twenty-eight page paperback book, well-known author Coble pens the second of her Hope Beach series as another story from the North Carolina coasts of the Outer Banks. Targeted toward readers of Christian fiction, there is romance and suspense without any profanity or overtly sexual or violent scenes yet there are vague discussions about premarital pregnancy and drugs. At the end of the story, there is a letter from the writer, an eight question reading group guide, acknowledgements and ten pages devoted to another one of her written works.

In this tale, unmarried Amy Lang, a midwife in her early thirties, receives an anonymous email beckoning her to come back to Hope Beach, where cherished memories of her older brother and she vacationed at their wealthy parents’ cottage. With her brother, Ben, perishing there unexpectedly from a surfing accident four months ago, she warily decides to stay at the cottage and set up her midwife practice while she both grieves and investigates his death.

Meanwhile, the handsome Coast Guard officer, Curtis, has been keeping a secret about the one year old little girl in his care belonging to his sister, Gina, who was killed in a strange boating accident weeks before Amy’s brother died. Curtis has to come to terms with not only Gina’s past relationships, he is told who is the infant’s father and has to deal with it.

While both Amy and Curtis think they know everything about each of their supposedly flawless and perfect siblings, they too have regrets and reservations as they delve further into why Ben and Gina died and how they relate to it and each other.

Although with suspense, intrigue and plot twists, the story is predictable, especially as it relates to the on and off again romance between two torn people who want the best for the young child as they turn to God for support and reconciliation. As usual, Coble’s plethora of characters will, no doubt, give the reader more to look forward to in future series about Hope Beach.
