Psalms 25:4 states “Shew me Thy ways, O Lord; teach me Thy paths.” Author Anita Higman blends this Bible verse with romance in her Christian novel, A Merry Little Christmas, which is part of the “Songs of the Season” series.

With two hundred and fifty-four pages, this pocket-sized hardbound book has a snowy Christmas homestead scene on the front jacket cover and a few paragraphs on the back. With only modest kissing and no sex, profanity or questionable topics except for bigotry, the Christian book is targeted toward mature teenage to young adult women but could be enjoyed by any romantic reader.

The seasonal tome is about Franny, a young thirty-something farmer who has taken over her parents’ farm when they were tragically killed while in her late teens. Set in Oklahoma in the 1960s, she is an independent, self-supportive and hard-working woman who fantasizes of working in the music industry in a big city instead of raising pigs.

When rich thirty-five year old Charlie surprises the young lady while she is singing and feeding the livestock, she falls into the mud and he comes to her rescue. He offers to buy the family ranch for the absorbent price she wants and she easily complies so she can leave to fulfill her musical dreams. They agree to her staying three weeks to show the naïve new owner the farming ropes.

When Franny leaves the new man in her life and her childhood home that is full of old and new memories, she takes no mementos and heads off to the big city to make her melodic mark on the world, but is turned down at every radio station she enters. Meanwhile, Charlie has problems of his own when the barn burns down, he and the help are injured and he tries to locate the past owner. After running into each other at a diner where she works and befriends an African American woman, she goes back to the farm, working for her new employer.

Love continues to bloom as the two tend the land and feed the animals as they share their past fears, hopes, dreams and love of God. Charlie has an obsessive, controlling father that mandates both his sons’ obedience to his beck and call while Franny deals with knowing about a bigoted murderer.

Will Charles acquiesce to his father’s continual demands or will he give all his love to a woman so different than his upbringing? Will Franny finally find closure with her parents’ death and will the murderer finally confess? Will both rely on God to show them their paths, together or apart, to a Merry Christmas? Although predictable, Higman writes of a pure, innocent love between two godly people whose intentions are to try to always do what is right.
