With each stroke of their paddles the shore got closer and an unspoken confidence began to build. The crisis over, and this impossible thing no one had ever done, escaping from the island prison of Alcatraz, was within sight.”

A historical fiction novel based off of the real life 1962 escape of three prisoners from the island of Alcatraz. Inseparable: An Alcatraz Escape Adventure, by David Kruh is a skillfully written look at what might have happened on that June night in 1962 when three men washed up on the shore of San Francisco.

Frank Morris, Clarence Anglin and John Anglin had a clever plan to escape the prison that is colloquially referred to as “The Rock.” The brains of the group, Frank, devised a plan involving the use of three papier-mâché heads. The heads were made using materials from the prisons art program and placed in the bunks of the escapees so that the guards patrolling their cell block overnight would not realize that the prisoners were missing.

It was a plan so simple that it was brilliant, but it didn't go off without a hitch. The first problem was that the fourth escapee, Allan West, was not able to make it out of the prison with the others and had to be left behind. Because of the loss of West in their plan, the raft that the prisoners had constructed out of raincoats did not paddle correctly and they ended up way off course.

Adding on to this, the raft soon sprung a leak and began to deflate, casting all three men into the freezing, rushing waters of the San Francisco Bay. Split up and desperate for food and shelter, the men made it to the shore by sheer miracle, but what they would face once they got there was anyone's guess.

A five-star read from David Kruh! This is a must read for any lovers of adventure historical fiction or Alcatraz enthusiasts! When I was in San Francisco, I took the Alcatraz tour which, I highly recommend as well.  Inseparable: An Alcatraz Escape Adventure should be in their souvenir shop!
