It's the summer of 1995, and Nico is about to hit the big time.
As a seventeen-year-old who is still grieving the death of her sister, Nico thinks she has already experienced the ups and downs of life in their fullest detail, but she has no idea what kind of roller coaster she is about to embark on.
For most of us, the summer of our seventeenth year is spent hanging out with friends, going to high- school parties, perhaps working a part-time job, and driving around in a cheap used car, but for Nico, summer is about to be an altogether new experience. See, Nico is the back up singer in a band called the 'Grenade Bouquets' and the band is about to go on a tour around the country.
Since Nico is still underage, she needs permission from her parents to go. Considering that Nico ran away from home shortly after her sister's death (which is the plot of the first novel in this series 'Runaway Train') it is difficult for them to give, but eventually they agree.
Soon, Nico is traveling the country in a fire-engine red VW and spending nights in hotel rooms with her new older boyfriend, Evan. As fame begins to find the Grenade Bouquets, and record companies begin coming to their shows, Nico slowly begins to take center stage in the band—much to the dismay of the lead singer, Clarissa. Though Nico is finally getting everything she dreamed of, will the cost be too much to bear?
Every beat of this novel is exciting. At times gritty, heart wrenching and at other times funny and life-affirming, Lee Matthew Goldberg strikes the perfect balance with his writing. The book is peppered with musical references to classic 90's Grunge and Pop and every chapter is named after a song from that time.
