This
book opens in the aftermath of a very devastating tornado that has
just swept across a small town. The radio announcer for has just
stated that they are lining up bodies in the local Maple Springs
gymnasium. The people of this sleep hammock have never seen
devastation on this level. Their heads are reeling and their hearts
are hurting. Many homes and businesses have been totally destroyed.
Chapter one skips back fourteen hours and introduces us to some of the main characters in this fun read. Dancer, Jim, Paula, Kayla, Wayne, Anita, and Clayton who has recently died, Trudy is Clayton’s ex-wife, are the main characters. Jim and Paula are married and Kayla is their daughter. Wayne and Anita are married, but on the skids. Clayton and Paula were sweethearts in high school, but their romance did not last. Dancer is Jim and Clayton’s father and the grandfather of Kayla.
Dancer and Clayton had a juke box business where they restored old classic juke boxes and resold them until Clayton died. Most people believe that Clayton took his own life and Dancer and his family are trying to come to terms with that scenario. Dancer wants to continue the business, but his son, Jim, is not keen on that idea. Dancer is moving in with Jim and Paula because Clayton’s home was just sold to a big -time developer.
Jim has a Chevrolet dealership in this small town and he is very successful and well thought of. Kayla works for him and loves her job. Paula is a nurse in the local clinic.
Kayla is pregnant and planning her wedding. Her husband to be has just been given a promotion in his job which requires a move to New York City. She is perplexed. Maple Springs is all she has known and the people that she works with at the dealership are like family. What will she do?
Wayne has recently come back from Iraq. He was in the military and got an honorable discharge. He wants to work things out with Anita. They have two children together. Anita is not inclined to work things out with Wayne and has recently become engaged to the big -time developer in town. Temporarily their relationship is a secret.
Trudy and Anita run around together and Wayne thinks that Trudy is the reason that Anita does not want to work things out with him. He is wrong.
Wayne had a good buddy that went into the service with him. His name is Sonny. Sonny died while they were on a patrol there and Wayne could not save him. Wayne harbors a lot of guilt because of this mess, but he is also burning for Sonny and dreams of them being lovers which, of course, cannot be realized since Sonny is dead.
Lot’s of drama that ties on relationship and family into the other. I really enjoyed reading this book and look forward to reading more from this author.
