In 1920 world chess champion Jose Raul Capablanca created a more complex, richer game of chess to include two new pieces on a larger playing board, with the main motivation to be the threat of “draw death.” Like the skilled, renown, fast-playing chess grandmaster, The Capablanca Variation ~ The End Game by Douglas Quinn is a book of strategic placement of human pawns to conquer and win the final end game, but of terrorism, not of checkmates.

This two hundred and seventy seven page paperback novel has a clock ticking time bomb on the front cover against a black and white background and three paragraphs about the book, two reviews and a sentence with a small photograph of the author on the back. Although there were no typographical or grammar errors, there were two minor capitalization and one punctuation issue. If the book was made into a movie, it would be R rated for its profanity, sex scenes and graphic violence, therefore it would not be suitable for preteen or under ages.

This tome is the third and final in its series by Quinn but there is room for a fourth based on the storyline. Jennifer Ellis’ twin brother is arrested by the FBI and put in jail for co-conspiracy connected with an Arabic terrorism cell. Since Jennie and her brother were involved in a Spanish plane hijacking when they were sixteen years old and she shot and killed the main perpetrator, The CIA and FBI coerce her to be the bait in taking out the second most wanted terrorist in the world.

Used as a pawn, Jennie goes undercover but the mission is quickly botched and she is kidnapped by the same group she is trying to lure. Two women from her past dealings with the hijacking, an American underground rogue group called the Slaughterhouse 5 and an elderly financier who seems to know everything, everywhere at every moment in time move across the chessboard of the Spain, Morocco and the Middle East trying to locate, protect and rescue the quick, resourceful girl and capture her abductors in the process.

This cat and mouse, stay one step ahead of the other to apprehend the bad guy while staying alive page turner gets going once the characters are well-established. If Jennie is not flaunting herself on the beach to attract the womanizing terrorist, she is drugged, gagged, moved from safe house to terrorist camp via donkeys, all the while being used as a tool by several different controllers who maneuver and scheme against one another other to get what they want.
