Good day Rich and thanks for participating in our interview
Norm:
Please tell our readers a little bit about your personal and professional background.
Rich:
Personally, I have been happily married for 23 years and have two children in college. Professionally, I started several computer companies as well as a real estate investment business. I have had some challenges in my life including nine surgeries as the result of an automobile accident, am a six year cancer survivor and live with Parkinson’s disease. Despite those, I have been successful in business, practiced and taught martial arts for 24 years and have my commercial pilot’s license.
Norm:
What motivated you to write A Handbook For Life: A Practical Guide To Success And Happiness?
Rich:
So many people are looking for ways to achieve goals and overcome obstacles. There are a lot of very good self help books, CDs and DVDs available to guide people to happier, more fulfilling lives. The problem is that they typically require more of an investment in time and energy than most people are either willing to or able to provide. I wanted to write a book that not only contained material that worked, but was easy to put into practice so people would actually receive the benefits of what they read.
Norm:
Can you share a little of your book with us? Why did you choose the format you used in your book and what do you want your book to do? As a follow up, whom do you believe will benefit from your book and why?
Rich:
If someone wanted to they could read A Handbook for Life in one sitting. That would be great, but then they would put the book away, feel good for an hour or so, and not enjoy any real improvements. I wanted to design a book that was simple to read and had practical exercises that were easy enough to follow so people would actually do the exercises and experience positive changes in their lives. I believe that A Handbook for Life is the perfect book not only for someone who is facing challenges in their lives, but also for young people starting out in the business world who need some guidance on how to relate to other people and achieve success in their future.
Norm:
What was the most difficult part of writing your book?
Rich:
The most difficult part for me was breaking down the mindset that I have lived my life by into words. I feel that most people’s actions, mine included, are our natural reactions based on our personalities and experiences. I never thought much about how I accomplished what I have considering the challenges that I faced along the way.
Norm:
Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?
Rich:
After writing the book and beginning to speak about it I learned that people are actually listening and having success improving their lives. That is the most rewarding aspect for me.
Norm:
What challenges or obstacles did you encounter while writing your book? How did you overcome these challenges?
Rich:
My biggest challenge was putting down onto paper the concepts that I felt were most important. I didn’t want to leave out any topics that I thought were important, but I wanted to have a book that was short enough that people would actually put the principles into practice.
Norm:
You certainly had to deal with many challenges such as nine surgeries from an automobile accident, overcoming prostrate cancer, and dealing with Parkinson’s disease. What keeps you going?
Rich:
I truly feel that our attitudes determine our happiness. When we accept that life has challenges then we don’t focus on the challenges. I also realize that I can’t control anything in life more than what is happening to me right NOW. I strive to be the best person that I can be every day and to positively affect everyone that I meet in some way.
Norm:
As a follow up, how are you dealing with Parkinson’s disease? Do you follow any exercise regime or any other regime?
Rich:
Being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease answered a lot of questions for me. I didn’t understand why I was having balance and coordination problems. I had benign tremors since my twenties, so I didn’t recognize them as a symptom of my Parkinson’s. Almost immediately after being diagnosed and taking the right medication I found that I not only felt better, but I could think more clearly. I work out with weights and a treadmill three mornings a week. I take walks as much as possible and still continue to train in the martial arts. I have found that physical exercise helps me overcome the Parkinson’s symptoms almost as much as the medicine.
Norm:
Are you working on any books/projects that you would like to share with us? (We would love to hear all about them!)
Rich:
A Handbook for Life was designed to be the first in a
series. I am already planning for follow-up topics such as:
A Handbook for Friends: A Handbook for Personal Relationships: A Handbook for Business Relationships: A Handbook for Parents:
A Handbook for Employees:
I have a lot of life experiences that I am looking forward to sharing.
Norm:
