    Author: Steven Manly Visions

    Publisher: New Page Books

    ISBN:  978-1-60163-129-9

Visions of the Multiverse is a very readable introduction to some very strange concepts in physics. Its advantage is that it’s short and requires no math expertise from the lay reader, even though much of it is really about mathematics. However, it does require you to think about things. Its disadvantage is that it’s short and requires no math expertise—in other words, you may arrive at the end somewhat dissatisfied by your lack of understanding of these topics. If that’s the case, bless your soul, there are more meaty tomes (also with little or no mathematics) that expand on the ideas contained in this book.

Authors: Paul R. Ehrlich and Robert E. Ornstein
    Publisher: Rowman and Littlefield
    ISBN: 978-1-4422-0648-9

With their intriguing analogy of the tightrope walker, authors Ehrlich and Ornstein draw readers into their compelling argument for redefining our notions of family and community.  That walker, the authors say, is the human race, the rope the many global crises confronting us, and that perilous journey our own progress towards an uncertain future.  And what the world sorely needs to navigate that perilous rope is empathy, specifically that of its more privileged nations.

Potluck dinners – how many have you been to over the years? If you’re like me, it’s been dozens upon dozens – literally. And each time, I’d bring one of my three standard dishes because they were easy to make, healthy and fed lots of people.

Authors: Kathryn Bolkovac and Carl Lynn

    ISBN: 13: 978-0-230-10802-8

    Publisher: Palgrave Macmillan

It takes a great deal of moxy and doggedness to become a whistle blower especially when it involves scandalous crimes perpetrated by United Nations' personnel, NATO troops and other international officials, as well as the local police in Bosnia during the United Nations policing mission in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

No one, including the author, knew that Dewey would become beyond famous – a little kitten who, on a fifteen-degree below zero night in Spencer, Iowa, was slipped through the book return slot at the Spencer Public Library.  And, from that point on, became the most loved animal in America.  Well…certainly in Iowa.

    Author: Leslie Dunton-Downer

Publisher: Touchstone (A division of Simon and Schuster, Inc.)

    ISBN: 978-1-4391-7665-8

As English is undeniably a complicated language, it is not surprising that unraveling the origins of some of its words requires a scholarly approach. Although The English Is Coming! is not an easy read, author Leslie Dunton-Downer has made the subject of linguistics more easily digested by the layman.

    Author: Kathryn Rose
    Publisher: CreateSpace
    ISBN: 9781453834558

This newly updated September 2010 guide on how parents can help their children avoid the numerous predators that lurk, just waiting for their turn on pounce on unsuspecting users of social networking sites, is a useful instructional manual that is easily accessible, even to those of us who were born in an era in which the Internet had not even been fully conceived.

    Author: Betsy Lerner

    Publisher: Riverhead Books

    ISBN: 978-1-59448-483-4

It is always instructive to listen to those in the know and whose sharp analysis is right on the mark. Drawing from a variety of sources, as well as her many lessons and experiences as an editor, Lerner does a fine job in sharing a good deal of insight enabling her readers to enjoy a voyeuristic peek behind the scenes and a clearer perspective of the “crazy” world of publishing

    Author: Neil Cossar

Publisher: Omnibus Press, a Division of Music Sales Limited

    ISBN: 978-1-84938-543-5

I would wager that 99% of those who pick up This Day in Music turn immediately to their own birthdays to see who was born on the same day. The other 1% are those who insist on reading any book—even when it is arranged in a day-by-day calendar format such as this—from beginning to end. Either approach works, as This Day in Music is fun and enlightening any way you slice it

    Author: Mark Morford

    ISBN: 978-0-9842997-0-6

    Publisher: Rapture Machine Inc

I guess for some readers, Morford is the angry, cynical guy, who is in the wrong political camp. As the French say, chacun à son goût (each to his or her own taste)

    Author: William B. Bradshaw
    Publisher: Austin, TX: Synergy Books
    ISBN: 0-9842358-5-X

Bradshaw is in a perfect position to have written such a book, as he earned his PhD under the instruction of Dr. Matthew Black, principal of St. Mary’s College at the University of St. Andrews, who was rigorous in the attention that he paid to grammatical correctness. Bradshaw himself is a firm adherent to the principles laid out in The Chicago Manual of Style: The Essential Guide for Writers, Editors, and Publishers

Editor: Lee Goldberg & Members of The International Association of Media Tie-In Writers

This collection of essays written by members of the International Association of Media Tie-In Writers is designed for a very specific readership. As the group was organized by and for current and potential authors of books based on films, television series, and other media, one clear purpose of this collection is to present an exchange of ideas on how it’s all done. A wider audience would include readers of these books curious about how it’s all done as well, and no doubt fans of specific writers or the projects on which these books are built might enjoy the scattered bits of trivia throughout this publication.

To sum up your entire approach in an equation takes guts, and that is exactly what Charles D. Hayes has plenty of. September University is an aspirational work, based on the author’s assumption that “age + curiosity × attitude = a greater quality of life and hope for humanity”

I highly recommend this book for anyone. It would particularly be good for those interested in changing the prison system, either because they have someone incarcerated there, because they are incarcerated there, or because they see the hopelessness of the current situation

    Author:  Adam Selzer
    Publisher:  Llewellyn Worldwide
    ISBN:  978-0-7387-1557-5

Your Neighborhood Gives Me the Creeps by Adam Selzer is a book that actually gave me the creeps.  Not only is it full of ghost stories, primarily set in Chicago, but these are recorded by a self-proclaimed nonbeliever

    Author: Kaolin

Author: Henri Broch (Translated from the French by Bart K. Holland)
    ISBN: 978-0-8018-9246-2
Publisher: The John Hopkins University Press

What stands out in this book is that Broch allows the facts of his arguments to impress on their own, and they are impressive. Moreover, readers will be wowed by what he has dug up, although there will probably persist to exist hardcore believers in the supernatural, and I doubt very much if these individuals will ever be convinced otherwise

    Periscope® Book Light

As a prolific book reviewer and one whose sight is not exactly perfect, especially when I am reading in a dark room, the Periscope® Book Light is just what the doctor ordered. Over the years I tried all kinds of gadgets and very often these were usually relegated to the trash can. Was this going to happen to the Persicope® Book Light?

    Author: Farhan Ansari

    ISBN: 978-1-4196-7594-2

Ansari had my attention from the very first page. Knife on Skin at 7:30 is true accounting of the life as a surgeon -- with a taste of the afterlife thrown in. I found this author’s first novel extremely entertaining and educational.

    Author: Paul Damien
    ISBN-10: 1934454141
    ISBN-13: 978-1934454145

I found myself at a quandary when reading Paul Damien’s Help!: Debunking the Outrageous Claims of Self-help Gurus. First of all, I wanted to be totally open to what Paul Damien had to say. I have read numerous books on The Secret and the Law of Attraction in the past few years and let me say beforehand that I have read books from the “gurus” and from those who took looks into the industry, movement, or whatever other label might fit it. And I must say that although Paul Damien’s book might not have been the first to lambaste these gurus, it was the first book that I had the opportunity to read through and through.

    Brett L Abrams

    McFarland & Company, Inc. Publishers
    ISBN: 978-0-7864-3929-4

In this comprehensive overview of the development of Hollywood (particularly between 1917-1941), author Brett Abrams demonstrates how those who crossed the boundaries of the society’s sexual norms had a unique role to play in creating the image we have today of Tinseltown. Today most people’s image of Hollywood is one of a laissez faire, “anything goes” town dedicated to the movie business. Yet it wasn’t always that way.

    Author: Wendy Kays
    ISBN: 978-1-934454-26-8
    Publisher: Synergy Books

Certainly, Kays has discovered something extraordinary about the world of virtual games and essentially it is an impassioned and informative wake- up call to those who may still believe that virtual games are of little importance. Perhaps, with her detailed and clear-headed examination, she will even revolutionize our perspective of these games.
