The sheriff had his odd way of handling things and even his appearance was off putting and his manner of punishment terrifying. The phone service was spotty and the internet too as Brad tried to get a better handle on the town and how it’s run. The air filled with dust, musty odors and grime even in the house as Missy takes a tub and the experience is anything but cleansing. The house speaks to each person and death and black clouds hover over this town and the people who live there. Death, decay and fear plus odd ways of dealing with those that disobey, the people must withstand it all. But throughout the novel we learn about the mystery of Adamah and the Queen of Hearts who prays for peace and live in her home but will these characters ?

Twelve children in a classroom in the middle of the night along with Brad and the sheriff you won’t believe what the sheriff wanted history to tell them. The sheriff wants him to explore the town, the island and the house why? As Missy has a dream and the voice tells her she was called Queen of Hearts. But not everyone or everything is what it seems as we learn about the Queen of hearts from Jezebel and how they worship Adamah and the woman who was buried and then burned in the first scene.

Jennifer seems disoriented at times and living in the house Brad realizes is wrong but when he wants her to leave with him the reaction is startling.

Miriam Larkin is the woman from scene one and as Brad watches a film with her it re-enacts her life, her walking with a man away from Three Summers from the entire film he learns about the old woman he had driven to her grave. As it flashes to Missy and Roy the young child she is protecting but for how long ?

At the end we learn about Brad’s father joe he died and how it affected him brining him to this town plus the tragedy that happened facility who to a patient because of Jennifer changing the dynamics of both of their lives as Brad was hoping to write a blockbuster set of articles based on this town.

The final reveals explain the hidden meanings of Adamah and why Brad becomes more embroiled in the Jezebel of the towns we meet who owned the waist disposable five miles downriver on the northern bank leading to the Adamah mine. Next we learn more about Queen of Hearts and the sheriff’s reaction to his article but first more about Missy Holiday and her link to dealing with the safe tissues of the mine and a man named Richard Hettinga and who he really is.
