Norm: Good day Angel and thanks for participating in our interview

What do you consider to be your greatest success (or successes) so far in your various careers?

Angel: My greatest success has been in the ability to shift and rebrand.

Last year, I retired from a 10-year career in radio broadcasting to venture out as a public speaker. Being brave enough to start something new has been terrifying and thrilling all at the same time, but it’s taught me so much about being open to a bigger purpose and new opportunities.

Norm: What has been your greatest challenge (professionally) that you’ve overcome in getting to where you’re at today?

Angel: My greatest challenge has always been my mindset. As much as I’d like to think it was the economy, or losing out on a proposal, the challenge has only been when I’ve believed that my failures defined my success. I’ve paid for things I didn’t use or relied heavily on one stream of income. In the end, they’ve all been teachable moments.

Norm: As you hosted over 2000 broadcasts and interviewed over 4000 guests, what criteria did you use when selecting a subject to interview?

Angel: Our program was deemed “the most positive business talk show in America”. We looked for guests who were a great fit for our audience. Sometimes, even though it was a great breakthrough story, we’d have to pass, simply because it varied from what our audience came to expect. As a radio host, it’s our job to maintain the brand. So, we looked for entrepreneurs, we looked for entrepreneurial success and challenge stories, and we often interviewed authors.

Norm: Was writing always a career move for you or did it grow into one?

Angel: Writing was definitely a career move for me. I started by writing seminar outlines, then blog articles, and then books. However, I have to admit, that my first book I ever wrote was a children’s book, that I wrote in crayon, when my children were very little. That ended up being the 3rd book I published.

Norm: What do you think of the Internet market for writers?

Angel: I think it opens up the world for more people to share their stories. I believe that most people have a book inside of them, and with all the resources available, there is no reason not to publish.

Norm: What is a media exposure specialist and how did you become interested in becoming one?

Angel: I fell into it. I’ve always been a behind-the-scenes person, spreadsheets, post it notes, and file folders. But I was hired by a professional speaker. I did a lot of research on marketing at the time that social media was coming on board. I learned everything about relationship marketing, push versus pull marketing, and how to leverage your circle of influence.

Interviewing almost 5,000 people on the subject taught me a lot, too. Spending 10,000 hours on a subject turns anyone into a specialist.

Norm: Many people have the skills and drive to write a book, but failure to market and sell the book the right way is probably what keep a lot of people from finding success. Can you give us 2-3 strategies that have been effective for you in promoting your books?

Angel: Yes, thank you. I couldn’t agree more. Writing and publishing the book is just the beginning. My top tips for promoting your book are 1) start promoting it before it’s even finished. There’s no reason to wait until after it’s published. You can pre-sell, and you can get quotes and reviews by sharing the e-book version first. 2) host a book launch party to celebrate the incredible achievement. and 3) leverage the book in a media interview tour.

Norm: Could you tell our readers a little about your books, ABC’s of Exposure and Jumpstart for Business?

Angel: ABC’s of Exposure is a journal of my first year as a professional speaker. In 12 months, I retired from radio and traveled to six countries, spoke on 100 stages in 45 cities.

The picture on the cover was taken in London, 11 months after I left the radio business. I’m a list maker, so I created an alphabetical list of tips to leverage media, publishing and speaking to create brand awareness, attract more leads, and create a big impact.

Jumpstart For Business is my marketing system to turn your slowest months into your best months.

Norm: What motivated you to write the books and what were your goals and intentions in the books, and how well do you feel you achieved them?

Angel: I wrote the books based on the questions people were asking me. Anytime some wanted to “pick my brain” or get my advice, those are the answers I put into the books. I wrote them almost as a community service. Also, to turn my intellectual property into a piece of my sales funnel.

Each book becomes a “love letter” to my potential clients. I call it a Food Book™. They put food on the table, and clients into my funnel.

ABC’s is being released in Chicago at the end of July, when I speak on stage at an event called Ultimate Wealth Camp. It’s my 3rd time speaking at this event, so I wanted to have something new to offer the audience. I’m super excited to release the book there.

Norm: What makes your book stand out from the crowd?

Angel: It stands out because of who it speaks to. There is a niche market of people who want to use media, publishing and speaking to attract clients. It’s for those who want to speak to a crowd or an audience, versus one-to-one coffee meetings. It’s honest and thoughtful. I wrote the book to be kind. Putting my best stuff into a book is the best way I can serve my audience. Even if they can’t come here me speak, or hire me, they can still get so much of what I have to offer.

Norm: What was the most difficult part of writing the books? As a follow up, what did you enjoy most about writing this book?

Angel: The most difficult parts were 1) dedicating the time to do it. I travel extensively for work now, so my time to write seems even more limited than before. and second, keeping the tips short and sweet. Brevity is an art form.

The most enjoyable parts were reliving the stories and the moments I included. Being able to feature some of my clients successes is always joyful. The best part is always, no matter how many books I’ve published, holding that first proof copy in my hand is so exciting.

Norm: What is the most important thing that people don't know about the subject of your books, that they need to know?

Angel: It’s an alphabetical list of tips to help you transform your media exposure.

Norm: Are you working on any books/projects that you would like to share with us? (We would love to hear all about them!)

Angel: I’m just starting the media tour for ABC’s. Earlier this year, I was in a group book called Impact: Life, Leadership and Legacy. So, I’m co-marketing that book with 3 other fantastic women. I’ve created a facebook group called Media Mastery Group, that we do media transformation challenges, and right now we’re doing a 100 comment challenge. It’s a super interactive community.

Norm: As this interview comes to an end, what question do you wish that someone would ask about your books, but nobody has?

Angel: Where can I buy it? (ha ha)

The question I ask myself is this “Am I doing what God wants me to do with my gift?”  It’s not just a book of tips, it’s a book of encouragement for people to shine and share their gifts with the world. It’s a love letter to my readers.

Norm: Thanks once again and good luck with all of your future endeavors
