Getting children interested in reading is one thing, getting children excited and wanting to learn more is a great achievement. In this first book of
Everyday Role Model Series, Lesa Hammond accomplishes the goal in
Thompson Twins: Las Vegas Adventure.
This eighty five page softbound book has a colored drawing of two twin ten year olds against the Las Vegas strip on the front cover. The back cover has one paragraph about the book contents, a note about its non-profit organization and website for contact. Inside there are a few black and white drawings by illustrator Tom Hall along with a photograph of Leonard Wilson Jr with his biography, parent/teacher activities, about the series and acknowledgements. There were page formatting issues including missing words (page 20/21 and 42/43) along with some intentional misspellings for emphasis that might confuse a young reader. The word “hecka” is used often perhaps because it is targeted for low-income inner city eight to twelve year olds.
The short story is about twins Letty and Carlos who live with their mother and Grandma in Oakland, California. When their father calls, he invites them to Las Vegas to be with his mom and him for a weekend. Reluctant Carlos and excited Letty take their first airplane ride alone to the fascinating city.
The next morning, the twins’ father takes them to New York New York Hotel so he can watch a football game. Bored with watching the sport, they meet an old friend of their father, Mr. Wilson, who is Vice President of Human Resources at the hotel. He agrees to show them around the hotel.
While showing them the penthouse suite, the casino area or having lunch, the three discuss the importance of going to college and being persistent when you find something you want in life. Later, Carlos and Letty see famous teenage actress Phoenix Skye in the hotel and start to follow her. Besides pretending to be Mr. Wilson’s nephew and niece, the two children are afraid of Skye’s three body guards.
Realizing his kids are missing, the twins’ father and Mr. Wilson look for them and when they connect, they surprise the two by introducing them to the television star. After the children fly back home, they do their school report on meeting the smart Mr. Wilson and show photographs of being with Phoenix Skye.
This is an excellent educational read for any young person, no matter his or her background or upbringing that installs not only the importance of a good education but to be persistent and strive to excel in life. One will look forward to where the Thompson twins will go on their next adventure.
