Kitty Leech has written and published her fifth children’s book titled, The Mermaid Picnic, a lovely story about making the best out of uncontrollable circumstances in a young child’s life.

This unnumbered thirty five page oversized soft cover booklet has a watercolor picture of four colorfully dressed girls dancing with their mermaid doll on the front jacket and the same picture smaller on the back with a one sentence description. There are no book reviews, author biography or author photograph included. Inside there is a simple list of the authors’ books and a dedication before the story starts. There were no grammatical or typographical errors noticed and the font is large. The book is easily comprehendible to the four to seven year old age group.

In this cute story, well thought out and hand painted colorful and detailed pictures are on the full right side of the book pages with the story written on the left that includes a small design at the bottom of each page. The end of the book has a full two page cookie recipe along with a two page song lyrics with some book editions including a CD recording for extra purchase.

In this children’s story, young Emily is sad that it is raining outside and her two friends will soon have to leave their stay at the shore. So instead of being sad and depressed about the gloomy weather the last day of the friends’ stay, her mom, sister and Emily plan a mermaid picnic out in the rain, complete with star fish sandwiches, rainbow punch and sand tarts. After going to the store to buy ingredients and getting candy seashells from the grocer, the four girls make the sandwiches, bake the cookies, set the picnic table out in the rain and have their fun but wet picnic. Emily’s younger sister offers her mermaid doll to be the table center piece. Not concerned with the rain, the girls dress up in costumes of colored bathing suits and beach skirts and pretend they have tails like mermaids. They eat their homemade meals, sing mermaid songs and splash in the rain, making it a great day to remember.

Leech’s book is perfect for young girls who still play with dolls and have the imagination to pretend, especially if they like mermaids. It is a great gift to any young child that loves to create, conjure and play fantasy games alone or with their friends.
