John Hough Jr.
John Hough, Jr. teaches
fiction writing on Martha's Vineyard and is the author of The
Fiction Writer's Guide to Dialogue. He is the author of six
novels, including Seen the Glory: A Novel of the Battle of
Gettysburg, winner of the 2010 Y.W. Boyd Award for excellence in
military fiction from the American Library Association. His novel,
Little Bighorn, was published in 2014. Mr. Hough lives with his
wife in West Tisbury, Massachusetts.

Long ago, when I was
taking my first uncertain steps as a writer, a successful and much
older novelist told me, by way of instruction, “Fiction is
shorthand.” I didn’t quite grasp her meaning, but over time the
truth of this beautiful reduction became clearer and clearer to me,
until I had embraced it as gospel.
