Let’s pretend this book is a short story collection where the stories are about U.S. executive departments A, B, C, and so forth, and their associated agencies. They’re not fictional stories, but the American public in general still has no idea about what A, B, and C does. A might be the U.S. Department of Commerce, for example, and that department contains NOAA and the National Weather Service (in fact, only less than 10% of that department has anything to do with commerce in the business sense because it manages science and technology data).

Author: Steven Manly Visions

Publisher: New Page Books

ISBN:  978-1-60163-129-9

Visions of the Multiverse is a very readable introduction to some very strange concepts in physics. Its advantage is that it’s short and requires no math expertise from the lay reader, even though much of it is really about mathematics. However, it does require you to think about things. Its disadvantage is that it’s short and requires no math expertise—in other words, you may arrive at the end somewhat dissatisfied by your lack of understanding of these topics. If that’s the case, bless your soul, there are more meaty tomes (also with little or no mathematics) that expand on the ideas contained in this book.

If you like to read experimental and avant garde works, your prose and poetic muse will suffer satisfactory shock and awe with this novel. It is orthogonal to that literary and commercial space where you might find a good, well-plotted story to accompany you, say, on that long and uncomfortable plane ride from New York to LA. I call it a novel even though the story becomes lost in philosophical soliloquies and I’m sure at least some of it is autobiographical.

Author: Sven Michael Davison

Publisher: Bedouin Press

ISBN: 978-0-9666149-2-3

With State of Mind, Mr. Davison has written a bloody and mind-blowing tour de force, both literally and figuratively. It is both entertaining and thought-provoking but definitely not for the faint of heart.

Author: John L. Betcher

Do you need an entertaining and action-packed book for your summer reading? This is it! A very realistically portrayed terrorist attack in an unusual setting provided me with a nerve-wrenching adrenalin rush. If you’re into suspenseful thrillers, try this one on for size

Author: Carolyn J. Rose

Publisher: Five Star Publishing

I recommend that you try this book—you’ll end up thoughtful about the human condition. You also may end up emotionally exhausted. But you’ll be entertained in the process.

The main theme of this novel, that the threat of cyber attacks becomes more and more important as the complexities of the chip manufacturing process bring us to the point where machines design the chips, is a very real one

Author: R. J. McDonnell
Publisher:  Killeena Publishing

You may approach it with some misgivings like I did—the title sounds too much like the first book, so you wonder.  Don’t.  McDonnell still tells an entertaining story, if not so funny this time

Author: Tempest O’Rourke

There are many lessons to be learned here.  The author has a wealth of real world experience behind him and this translates well to the written page.  He has constructed a thriller with philosophical meat, unusual for our times.  The negatives I have mentioned do not distract from this first-rate page turner.  I found it an excellent read.  Try it

Author: D. M. Annechino
ISBN: 978-098255503-3

This novel provided me with a comfortable evening sitting in my recliner and sipping my Jameson’s.  But I’m not sure this kind of suspense novel should be “comfortable.”  Deaver at his best is not comfortable.  Harris’ Hannibal is not comfortable.  Annechino’s story lacks that twist that leaves you breathless and wondering about the evil side of genius. On the other hand, this story ranks right up there with some of Deaver’s and Patterson’s work (which recently has become somewhat formulistic). I recommend you take a look.  Like I said, it has all the right stuff.

The Big Grabowski is subtitled A Devil’s Harbor Mystery.  Hopefully this means that there will be more in the series.  I recommend this one for your spring reading, or even to accompany your Irish coffee when the nor’easter is raging outside.  Enjoy it.  I did.
