It seems in today’s high tech world, a great deal of promotion and networking is geared toward online readers and businesses. But, the world does not begin and end with the internet—we tend to forget about the original form of networking which if face-to-face

I found Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine for Women’s Health interesting and informative. I’m not sure if I would recommend it as a self-help book, but I would certainly recommend it as a useful tool to learn about acupuncture and TCM and its benefits to women’s health issues.

The Tiny Caterpillar provides an important message about the differences between us all. I read The Tiny Caterpillar to my 3-year-old grandson and he enjoyed it. He listened attentively and was concerned about the tiny caterpillar. He also enjoyed the illustrations. This is the reaction an author wants from a young child. However, there were some drawbacks.

As the title states, this is a book theorizing about the socialization process. It encompasses what causes conflict (resulting in guilt, shame, humiliation, and other emotions) and what may be a solution to the conflict. The promo to this book suggests that it is a scientific text and also a self-help resource. I have to say, though, it is primarily a scientific text including a section that provides “formal proof” in the form of scientific formulas.

Author: Diane Hart Sandin

Ability to Sleep on Toilet Required is a get down and dirty book about being a paraplegic. The author, Sandin, has been paraplegic for over 30 years due to a car accident in 1975; she conveys some of the annoying and funny sides of this condition as well as her thoughts on others’ behavior. While telling her story Sandin is engaging at times, funny at times, abrasive at times, and vulnerable at times.

In the self-help arena of books, this one holds its own. While I don’t agree with everything the authors reveal in the book, on a whole, I think it is a worthwhile read

Author: Lucy Nolan
Illustrator: Connie McLennan

Age Level: 3-7
ISBN: 978-1-934359-96-9 (hardcover): ISBN: 978-1-607180-41-8 (pbk.)

As the title of this book implies, with ingenuity and an obvious love of the sea, Ms. Nolan took some wonderful old standard nursery rhymes and wove them into sea and coastline themed poems. Within these rhymes, Ms. Nolan introduces bits of nautical history and information. Instead of Jack and Jill, it’s Jack and June who go up a dune. Sing a Song of Sixpense includes a trawler crew, first mate, captain, and deckhand.
