Wendell Blackmon is married to Sand Valley’s judge Reva Blackmon. She is essentially the essence of his world and the woman who has always insisted they’ve known each other for all eternity. Reva came from humble beginnings and at a very young age was the unfortunate victim of a horrific accident which left her without her lower right leg.
She learnt to cope with her disability and was eventually given the use of a wooden leg - it was a good job nobody had told her its previous owner ended up dead after being savagely beaten over the head with the leg. As if Reva’s disability wasn’t enough to cope with she had to learn to get on with life after learning the news her mother was slipping away from life and would soon be dead. Before Reva knew it she had lost all she ever cared about, including her childhood home.
She did not know what to do but then out of the blue a marriage proposal left her little choice. She would now have to marry, the question is: would she ever love her husband? Fate was about to intervene, and she was never given such a choice.
For Wendell, his childhood years consisted of spending quality time with his mother and seven sisters. How great those memories were of sitting around the table and singing along to the battery-powered radio. He remembered much of these innocent times as a grown man and memories like this would flicker through his mind like a flame.
Although these two have met and lived their years
together happily something sinister might just be around the corner.
A sordid investigation is set to get underway and may risk revealing
a secret that even Wendell would prefer not to discover.
Who has killed the promiscuous woman who engaged in
rather sexual activities at Sorrow Wood Cave? And what effect will
this have on Wendell and all those who know him?
We have a character ironically named Happy who remained very unhappy for the rest of his life and people who live in run-down trailers.
This book is filled with hilarious and perhaps red-necked characters who will amuse you until the last page. You’ll laugh and cringe at the same time.
This novel oozes with Southern charm and is both a love story and a mystery. Everything comes together so well with the rich literature and highly imaginative characters created by Raymond L. Atkins.
A book most will adore if you love social satire and mystery.
