Six-year-old Sadie and her brother Barley are busily preparing crafts for the fair. Then Sadie develops a problem—a sore throat, and not your ordinary, garden variety sore throat at that, because Sadie is a giraffe. Her mom discovers that Sadie has a fever, as well, and administers love, medicine and a soothing popsicle.

It doesn’t take Sadie long to realize that this new illness may prevent her from participating in the fair, and she frets. Like all children, she resists going to see the doctor, but Mom insists, and soon Dr. Hippo is gently examining, and diagnosing a strep infection. She explains that Sadie will need to take an antibiotic to cure the strep and continue with pain medication and popsicles to ease the pain.

Sadie stays home from school, but keeps busy with her craft projects for the fair. “Many popsicles and a few days later, Sadie felt like new,” author Cowan summarizes. She is well just in time to enter her necklace in the fair and enjoy the fun of the event.

A youngster with a scratchy throat would be calmed by this story and encouraged to know that medication will help. Parents will welcome the supplemental adult reading tucked in a special pocket in the back of the book. This sturdy tri-fold reference addresses the questions apt to be on their minds:
