Doctor Bowe, author of The Beauty Of Dirty Skin, attend Yale University (undergrad BS in molecular/cellular/developmental biology) and medical school at the University of Pennsylvania. (2018, inside back cover) She is Medical Director for Integrative Dermatology at Advanced Dermatology, PC and an assistant professor of clinical dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in NYC. She is recipient of numerous awards for her skin care practices and treatments. Doctor Bowe has penned more than forty articles and many book chapters as she conducts clinical trials and develops/evaluates new topical products to add to her list of skincare services. Patients are especially intrigued by her BoweGlow series. She is married and has a daughter.

Doctor Bowe states in her introduction that she came to the practice of Dermatology as a young child when she suddenly found herself hospitalized due to a parasite. She endeavored to learn all she could about how to overcome this challenging situation and made it her lifeplan to become healthy and strong.

Bowe says “The idea that the state of your gut dictates a lot about your health (and how you look) is not nearly as revolutionary as you might think… Physicians from ancient Rome and Greece believed that illness often began in the colon.” (2018, p.28) Furthermore, “…Hippocrates, suggested that death sits in the gut…”.

Our bodies have a symbiotic relationship with our bacteria.” (2018, p.32) “The skin is among the body’s most important immune-related organs…”. (p.33) “Evidence of gut bacteria affecting obesity and, by extension, metabolism has come from animal and human studies comparing intestinal bacteria in obese and lean subjects.” (p,34) “An increasing amount of research being published in today’s most prestigious medical journals is tracing relationship between types of bugs in the gut and risk for insulin resistance type 1 diabetes.” (p.35)

As you can see Doctor Bowe has spent a lot of time studying the relationships between what we eat or what is going on in our intestinal systems to derive plans for how we can live healthier lives. She has conducted case studies and written articles about the affects of stress and the status of our skin. To which she says, “Our skin can have an almost allergic reaction to stressors.” (2018, p.74) “…stress releases certain stress-related hormones, such as histamines.” As we are aware, it is histamines that are the basis for allergies and inflammation.

I enjoyed learning more about the dynamics of diet, exercise, and skin. Over the years I have become more conscientious about what I eat and ensuring that I exercise, at least semi-regularly. I would love to partake in some of Doctor Bowe’s skin beautification services, but distance prohibits that at this juncture in my life. Read and learn!
