There has been much controversy over the legalization of recreational marijuana and its usage. Although several of our states and some countries in Europe have legalized it and Canada is in the process of legalizing the sale of it nationwide there is still much controversy and debate.

Defined “Cannabis or Marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug in the world and it is the most commonly used addictive substance after alcohol and tobacco. It is a natural plant which causes psychotropic effects in the brain when smoked or consumed and can cause real consequences in our everyday lives.” So , why do many people use in, have in their homes and how does it affect not only individuals, but families, communities, as well as society as a whole, are questions addressed by the author within this book? In this first chapter the author relates what it is, the many names, how it is consumed, how it gets you high and the uses of medical marijuana.

Chapter 2 focuses on what happens when you eat, inhale or smoke it and followed by what it does to your brain. But, the chapter that parents and teens need to focus on is what affect it has on teens in Chapter 4. How does it affect teens? As life beings so does the formation of the brain and your brain begins to develop in your mother’s womb. Imagine for a moment what might happen to your brain if it is exposed to a toxic substance, or to a physical or emotional trauma while it is still in the process of developing; this might slow or interfere with brain development in different ways, and might have future impacts that might be hard to predict.

Addiction is not out of the question when someone finds himself or herself compromising their morals, principles their careers or even their future goals, in order to for that “feel good” moment, you might find yourself doing it over and over again. This is where you need to start thinking and talking about addiction. Can anyone become addicted to cannabis? Who is more at risk of succumbing to cannabis addiction? Can some people use it without becoming addicted? All very important questions and answers that the author shares along with how it affects adolescents, teens and intelligence. What about risk factors related to who in your family would become addicted or could become addicted?

Questions asked such as :Do you have a parent, sibling or relative who has struggled with a drug or alcohol addiction? Are you suffering from anxiety or depression? Are you experiencing conflicts at home? These are some questions that you need to address besides focusing on family history, which is a definite risk factor and life stressors such as stressful circumstances, stress hormone called cortisol-increases your brain and body. It might even be tempting for you to consider cannabis to provide a temporary relief and feel good moments. Pages 46-47 elaborates with important risk factor information.

Next the author tackles the whether cannabis can lead to intellectual decline or cognitive dysfunction. Can cannabis negatively affect your relationships? The author elaborates by stating that it is important to not that there is a difference between a social life based on obtaining pleasure as opposed to one which is based on principals and achieving fulfillment. Socializing often and surrounded by others and still feel lonely can happen, even if you have many people in your life, sometimes you or others might feel lonely and alone. He continues to explain these two contradictory statements on page 67.

Using marijuana as a drug he states can certainly provide some type of relief for some people, can cause physically pleasurable sensations but it would be hard or difficult to say that is necessarily leads to a permanent state of fulfillment or happiness. Others use it due to peer pressure. Just because your friends use it or you want to belong to a particular social group does not mean you have to fall prey to peer pressure. Added in the pictures shared to help graphically illustrate what each chapter presents helps readers understand the gravity of what the author is relating.

The photo on page 70 shows what happens when a young teen is being pressured. What happens when you feel lonely, dejected, and alone and have trouble making friends? Why not do something that others do just because you might decide to fit in and not be invisible or unnoticed? Read the case of a 14 year old and learn what happens when she is bullied, feels alone at home and her solution.

Can cannabis lead to symptoms of depression or anxiety? Can smoking it lead to lung cancer or other respiratory diseases? Picture the author shares a young 16 year old girls who has asthma who decides to smoke cannabis. She ends up in the ER and might not make it. Sometimes heavy marijuana smokers have respiratory issues and the rest you need to learn for yourself as the author shares important information that might help teens and adults understand why smoking cannabis with asthma or other respiratory issues should be reconsidered and can it lead to lung cancer? The answer is on page 85. Can it lead to suicide or can it lead to causing an accident? Can you free yourself form dependence and become independent once more? Get help if needed? Develop a new routine and by all means create and enjoy the new and free and , “Care to shout your commitment to becoming free, free, indeed, free at last.” A must read for anyone that smokes cannabis or is considering using it on a regular basis. The illustrations alone included by the author tells their own story and allows you the reader to take the journey to freedom.
