Norm Goldman, Publisher & Editor of Bookpleasures.com Interviews Dr. Jack Westman Author of The China-America Alliance: East Asian and American Cultural Values Promote Global Harmony

Bookpleasures.com is pleased to welcome as our guest, Dr. Jack Westman, Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. Dr. Westman is the author of over 150 professional publications and recently he has published The China-America Alliance: East Asian and American Cultural Values Promote Global Harmony.

Norm: Good day Dr. Westman and thank for participating in our interview.

What do you consider to be your greatest success or successes in your various careers and what was the greatest challenge?

Dr. Westman: The most rewarding achievement in my career as a family psychiatrist is seeing child advocacy teams that involved all of the systems involved with a child or teenager spread from my clinic at the University of Wisconsin throughout the state and ultimately the nation where they now are called Wraparound Teams. These Teams overcome the immense challenges of getting multiple systems to work together productively.

Norm: What motivated you to write The China-America Alliance?

Dr. Westman: During the Cold War, I was active with International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War and met with Soviet physicians and Mikhail Gorbachev in Moscow. This experience impressed me with how behind the scenes activities can influence international affairs.

Norm: What were your goals and intentions in this book, and how well do you feel you achieved them?

Dr. Westman: My aim is to show how decision-makers can work together for their mutual benefit by identifying their common interests and overcoming barriers to collaboration. Reviews of the book suggest that I may have achieved this. The greatest satisfaction in writing the book for me was spending three years doing research to get facts in the face of predominating misconceptions. In all of my professional activities, fact finding and overcoming biases and prejudices has been my essential tool.

Norm: What was the most difficult part of writing this book and what did you enjoy most about writing this book?

Dr. Westman: Because of the rampant misunderstandings, I had to do extensive research, but I enjoyed finding the facts.

Norm: What would you say is the most important thing that people don't know about your subject, that they need to know? As a follow up, whom do you believe will benefit from your book and why?

Dr. Westman: Most people do not know how similar and interdependent China and America are. Everyone needs to correct misunderstandings, especially policy makers.

Norm: What was one of the most surprising things you learned in writing your book?

Dr. Westman: That China has a capitalistic economy.

Norm: What do you believe are China's and America's three main priorities and challenges?

Dr. Westman: 1) Collaborating on climate change, 2) Resolving the North Korea threat and 3) Nuclear disarmament.

Norm: Do you feel optimistic about the future of relations between China and America not withstanding that in many areas the outlook looks bleak?

Dr. Westman: Yes. To the extent that the leaders back off from confrontation there will be room for collaboration.

Norm: Do you believe that we massively underestimate the Chinese and we spend very little time in thinking about them?

Dr. Westman: Yes.

Norm: Are you working on any books/projects that you would like to share with us? (We would love to hear all about them!)

Dr. Westman: In a similar vein, I m working on the prevention of child abuse and neglect. Follow Here For More Information

Norm: Where can our readers find out more about you and The China-America Alliance: East Asian and American Cultural Values Promote Global Harmony?

Norm; As this interview draws to a close what one question would you have liked me to ask you? Please share your answer.

Dr. Westman: Why do you delve into international affairs? Because I am a psychiatrist who recognizes that we all are influenced by the world we live in for better and for worse. There is too much angst in our nation and world now and it adversely affects all of our lives.

Norm: Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions. It's been an absolute pleasure to meet with you and read your work
