In addition, David has been very active in presenting keynotes and fully day seminars at tradeshows, conferences, and company events around the world.

Good day David and thanks for participating in our interview

Norm:

When and what made you become interested in marketing?

David:

Early in my career I was in sales. Unlike sales which is working with one buyer at a time, marketing is the art and science of identifying a distinct group of buyer personas and learning about the problems they face and creating a product or service that solves the problems. I loved this aspect. Marketers then create information to capture the attention of the buyer personas so they learn about the company and its products. The materials can be Web based ways to generate attention (YouTube videos, blogs, content-rich Web sites, Twitter feeds, and the like) or offline (tradeshow exhibits, speaking gigs, advertising, and the like). Marketers also communicate through the media and analyst communities to generate attention.

Norm:

How do you balance your various careers as writer, speaker, seminar leader, etc?

David:

I see myself as a one person publishing company. I publish a blog, free ebooks, print books, speeches, and so on. It’s all interrelated.

Norm:

When did you first consider yourself a writer? As a follow up, what has been the best part about being a published author?

David:

I’ve had three things that helped me to say to myself that I am a writer. 1) At Kenyon College, my economics professor said I was a good writer. 2) In 2001 I self-published a novel called Eyeball Wars that was reviewed by Publishers Weekly 3) My book The New Rules of Marketing & PR made the BusinessWeek bestseller list. Each of these things affirmed myself as a writer.

Norm:

Where do you get your information or ideas for your books? As a follow up, how has your education informed your writing?

David:

I had a liberal arts education which taught me how to think and how to articulate ideas. I find my material everywhere and all the time.

Norm:

Can you share a little of your current works with us?

David:

I am editing a series of books for John Wiley & Sons, Inc. called The New Rules of Social Media book series includes titles that expand on the ideas of my bestseller The New Rules of Marketing & PR with books that provide valuable insights and detail on different aspects of social media marketing.

Norm:

Any unique ways you'll be marketing your books that is different from how others authors market their books?

David:

ABSOLUTELY. I market my books in all sorts of interesting ways. My latest book World Wide Rave included these things: A tweet up at NASDAQ  and a VIDEO

Norm:

In the last year or so have you seen any changes in the way publishers publish and/or distribute books? Are there any emerging trends developing?

David:

Kindle has really taken off.

Norm:

What do you think of the new Internet market for writers?

David:

I think that anyone can get their material out there for free right now.  I’ve done several free ebooks such as The New Rules of Viral Marketing: How word-of-mouse spreads your ideas for free.

Norm:

Do you believe that most business people don't use their imagination and creativity when marketing their goods and services?

David:

Yes. Most people are operating on a playbook devised decades ago, before we had the web to tell our stories directly.

Norm:

What is next for David Meerman Scott?

David: I’m working on my book series.

Norm:

Do you have anything else specific that you want to say to your readers and how can they find out more about you and your books?

David:

Thank you for reading. You can achieve your goals, whatever they may be. You can find out more about me and my work on my WEBSITE

Thanks once again and good luck with all of your future endeavors.
