Do you remember eating space dust and chasing your mates with stick guns? These were the times of the 70s and compared to today they seem so dated.
You remember your parents saying “when I was a kid” and suddenly you realize you are saying those exact words to your children. This book should be on every bookcase of those born in the groovy era of the 70s…and even those like me who remember the 80s and beyond.
Do you remember a time when a blackberry used to mean fruit and not that of a hi-tech mobile phone.
Nowadays kids can buy kits on the internet specially designed to build tree houses. Sherman explains when he was a boy these things were unheard of and all it took to build your very own “tree camp” was a few enthusiastic friends, some nails and wood.
If you were a boy during the 70s you’ll surely remember those “war” games you used to play with a handful of mates. And of course, there were few fancy toy guns with sound and flashing lights - you simply had to grab a piece of wood, some nails and a strip of black electrical tape to build your weapon. The main rule was that you didn’t “bring your snotty little brother who’s just going to cry and want to go home halfway through the fight”.
Who remembers the television shows of the 70s? I can remember watching old re-runs of Mork & Mindy as well as some English faves which probably weren’t available to watch in America.
Playing out and walking to and from school was easy in the days of flared trousers and stingray bikes. There weren’t any worries of being abducted or worse. This kind of free-roaming life was usual and kids didn’t have to fear being attacked. The only people they had to fear were the ones in their imagination.
Nowadays music seems to have changed so much from what it was back then. However quite a few old favourites from that decade are recognised by kids today.
Everyone has heard of “Car Wash” “Bad Girls” and of course “Dancing Queen”. And if we’re honest it’s hard not to sing along to “Celebrate” when it pops up on the radio.
The author has even taken the time to write a non all-inclusive list of some of the successful bands and soloists of the 70s. He even mentions some bands that are around today, still playing and being played.
What amazes me however was how these artists took to their jobs. Unlike pop stars of today who make an album and think it is appropriate to then parade around in next to nothing, fall out of clubs drunk and attack photographers, the artists of the 70s took their jobs quite seriously and most knew to be on their best behaviour in front of the media.
How many can remember the old 70s films? Nowadays we have special effects and realistic acting unlike the productions back then. The only problem is where special effects have improved so also has the sound and now cinemas tend to think we expect all movies to be on at full volume - enough to burst your ear drums!
A fabulous book which will entertain you for hours. Why not invite your friends over, open it up and ask “do you remember when?”
This is written in a lovely upbeat way and the author brings up such lovely images of family camping trips, exciting adventures and friendly neighbourhoods it makes you sad to think all this is practically gone. If only…
