“I will help you when I can. We can fix things together. After all, you know, we are best friends forever,” Karen Kilpatrick rhymes in her children’s book, Peanut’s Mistake.

This thirty-two-page hardbound targets preschool to second graders who enjoy books about learning proper behavior. With no profanity or scary scenes, it would best be read out loud to beginner readers based on some complex words.

In this short story, a precocious dog named Peanut accidently knocks over a vase, doll, and books inside the house. Afraid he will be in trouble, he hides. Not initially noticing the mess, Carmin trips and ruins her new dress. Following the dog’s muddy paw prints, the little girl finds Peanut under her bed. Instead of scolding the dog, she helps clean up the mess, reminding her pet that we all make mistakes.

I like how the dog knows he has done wrong and that Carmin does not get angry and yell at her pet. After the story, there is a question section asking what does the reader do when he or she makes a mistake, listing responses from other characters in the series. It is nice to include three tips on what to do next time a mistake is made. The full-color, full-page drawings are expressive and easy to understand.

I could not find anything negative in this book that focuses on behaviors and what is expected of a child. Some may not like the rhyming format, but I found it simplistic enough to understand for a preschooler.

Attorney and award-winning author, Kilpatrick created the Pumpkinheads series that focuses on social and emotional development. She lives in Florida with her three children. Artist Campbell has spent twenty years as a digital artist. Wilson is an animator who has worked for two well-known animation companies.

I wish there were more books on the market regarding proper etiquette and behaviors to teach young ones. It is nice this is a series of nine books to date.

If you are looking for a charming children’s series that promotes proper actions and responsibilities in young ones, this one on owning up to one’s mistakes is a keeper.
