The night is lost without you,
Darkness is all there’d be.
Think of all that would be lost,
If you stay here with me.
Night’s a very special time,
With your soft light so blue.
To say thank you, this whole time,
I’ve long been chasing you,”

Tyler James Massey writes in his children’s book, Chasing the Moon.

This thirty-four page paperback targets children that like stories told in verse, especially about the moon and sun. With no scary scenes or profanity, it would be acceptable for those ages two to eight years old. Due to some complicated wording, it may be best read out loud to beginner readers.

Working previously for Disney, author Massey has lived in Oklahoma and California, having been inspired by his nephews and niece to write stories. Illustrator Chatterjee’s vivid designs are detailed with emotional expressions of the moon and sun that cover each full-page. Wording in an easy-to-read font overlaps the pages without being distracting.

In this cute tale of four lines per page rhyming format, the moon is sad as it feels it has no purpose in its life. Every night the world goes to sleep, and the moon watches over, feeling unimportant.

Wanting to chase the sun, the moon catches up with the sun one morning to share the sky. It is so happy that it wishes to stay in the perfect place it has found. The sun notices the moon, telling it how important it is.

As the moon continues to follow the sun, there is a total eclipse where the moon shadows and blocks out the sun. The two are seen as one in the darkened sky.

The sun is impressed with the moon’s wondrous display and compliments it on its beauty and inspiration. The sun thanks the moon for its glow at night and says it has been chasing it.

In the end, the moon learns how unique and significant it is and is happy to be the light in the night sky.

This quaint story is not only charming in well-written rhyming, it teaches young ones about the moon, the sun, an eclipse, and how important light is to our earth.
