At ninety-eight pages, this oblong hardbound targets those interested in World War Two, specifically when America was attacked by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor. Set up as pages from an old, cherished scrapbook, illustrator Cox’s added artistic touches flow from page to page, relating to a time of war, death, and devastation. The second part contains the historical stepping stones from both United States and Japan’s perspective, with leaders involved, a timeline, warnings missed, and Japanese’s military arsenal. The next section focuses on America’s battleship row, Pacific fleet, and planes, including the devastation and losses from both sides. Part four offers nine of the USS battleships involved, with a short history, purpose, and final salute, complete with photographs, information, and location. The final division is an eclectic collection showing posters, internment camps, rations, memorials, and significant quotes.

With most of the photographs in black and white, the sporadic color sets at ease the tragedy of war, the loss of those who fought and died, and how this specific attack forced a country into war.

Having a plethora of photographs, newspaper clippings, maps, telegrams, and vintage artifacts, the fascinating display makes readers feel they are a part of this personal yet worldwide memory.

Perfect as a coffee table book or to honor a WWII veteran, this book reminds us of the sacrifice, hardship, and patriotism of that unforgettable day.
