Prior to actually reviewing The Misadventures of Sister Mary Olga Fortitude by Davis Aujourd’Hui, I had several conversations via e-mail with him. I found him to be very warm and personable with an exceptional sense of humor.  Because I had found him to be so easy to converse with I looked forward to reviewing his new book.

When Mr. Aujourd’Hui’s (not his real name) book arrived I found that The Misadventures of Sister Mary Olga Fortitude is one in a series of books that he hopes to publish one day. (see back cover) The story takes place in what I assume is a fictional town by the name of Bucksnort, Wisconsin. The lead character, Sister Mary Olga Fortitude, had been born into a Baptist family and in her late teens, or early twenties, decided to convert to Catholicism and become a nun. As you might imagine, this decision did not please her parent’s, but regardless she followed her heart and became a bride of God anyway.

The book outlines Sister Mary Olga’s daily/yearly trials and tribulations in her new profession according to season and is written almost like she is sending you a personal letter. There are religious undertones followed by examples of what one should, and should not do, but all are tempered with a bit of cynicism and witticism.

The Reverend Mother, who was previously a prostitute, and Sister Mary Olga do not get along well, perhaps because of the Reverend Mother’s sordid past.  Sister Mary Olga is nosy and a gossip. Oftentimes she finds herself in troubling situations beyond her direct control which leaves the Reverend Mother seeking fitting avenues for holy punishment. Because, or perhaps in spite of, this division between them, Sister Mary Olga seeks her own spiritual comfort from her congregational confessors and the rigid hand of the Reverend Mother by tipping a little, sometimes more than a little, Jack Daniels or Old Granddad coupled her passionate ritual of smoking Marlboro cigarettes.

From people Sister Mary Olga grew up through their grandchildren there is a zany cast of characters and a collection of kooky events that will keep you laughing the whole way through The Misadventures of Sister Mary Olga Fortitude. For a non-stop tickle on your funny bone this religiously inspired book is a fun, quick, and easy read!
