So reads the extract from the back cover of the third edition of this book. In this edition, the fourth and the latest, the material has been thoroughly restructured, with an emphasis on the urgent need for orchestrated, global action, in order to address the manifold problems faced by the people on our planet today.

What exactly is the rainbow bridge? According to Brent Hunter, it has many connotations. For many of us, it could be  a bridge in space and time between a person and a  desired future. It could be a bridge between a much loved pet who has crossed over and its joyful reunion with its owner when the latter has also passed on. But in this book, the rainbow bridge is a specific bridge in time, starting from where we are, to a future where world peace is a natural consequence of a search for a personal inner peace, in which people from all walks of life come together in harmony with each other, in the realization that underneath their physical and ecumenical differences, they are actually made of the same material and CAN work together to solve the seemingly unsurmountable problems that plague our society and our planet today. Using a metaphor from his background in computer science, Brent Hunter likens his objective to finding an appropriate “operating system” for the world, the vision presumably being a mode of life, likening that of an operating system which is user friendly and virus free.

The contents of the book are divided into seven sections. In the first section, the author introduces the concept of the rainbow bridge and an account of his own background in business and information technology and in psychotherapy, along with a mention of his own multi-religious affiliations, explaining how they have influenced his quest for truth. In Section 2, the author presents sixty universal principles of living, which are the end result of a lifetime’s search for common ground distilled from all the major and even minor religious traditions of today. These are presented in bite-sized pieces, each principle seldom longer than a page. In Section 3, the author talks of precautions that need to be taken while interpreting these principles and implementing them. He also presents a slew of powerful meditations, which aim at yielding an experience of the underlying unity of Life.

Section 4 is devoted to exploring a vision for world peace, mentioning concrete initiatives that could be, or have been taken to usher in new beginnings in the search for a viable operating system that would be globally acceptable in the twenty first century. These include, a redefinition of the role of the United Nations, instituting a Department of Peace, introducing the concept of World Citizenship, overhauling the financial/economic banking systems, redefining governance, the role of the media as well as the modus operandi of scientific and cultural research among others, while simultaneously advocating global dialogue, debt forgiveness, eliminating nuclear weapons and terrorism. The author also mentions definite steps that have been taken to initiate World Peace.

Section 5 is the clarion call to action, when the urge to serve stems directly from our life purpose,  as a consequence of our personal search for our own inner peace. Mention is also made in this context of ongoing philanthropic programs that could be of relevance.

In Section 6, the author sums up the contents of his personal vision of the Rainbow Bridge, ending with an update of projects that have been initiated and the online presence of the Rainbow Bridge community. Section 7 ends with a number of inspiring quotations, evocative of the spirit of the Rainbow Bridge.

This is a book that is easily read and reread. The chapters are all short and sweet, and the thoughts encountered in it, each one of them, are subtle reminders of the One, Invisible, Intangible Self that sustains and empowers us all. It also speaks to you of your own ultimate destiny, a picture of an empowered You, using your particular talents to serve the world at large. Read this book when you are in need of solace or inspiration by opening a page at random. You might just find the answer you seek.

One might wonder if the concepts in this book are a touch too naive. An answer lies in a series of interviews by Dr. Nicholas Beecroft, under the title “The Future of Western Civilization” where just such non-hierarchical schemes based on respect for the sanctity of human life are being discussed threadbare.

This book is highly recommended to one and all.
