The truth is I can’t live like a monk anymore. When the campaign runs its course – or God willing, Dave becomes president – we need to talk about a divorce,” Will tells his wife in Shannon Ethridge and Kathryn Mackel’s novel, Veil of Secrets.

At three hundred and sixty-eight pages, this paperback targets those who enjoy Christian fiction concerning fractured relationships amidst a political backdrop. With some slang words, the topics of molestation, infidelity, and prostitution may not be apropos for immature readers.

In this tome set in current day New Hampshire, Will Connors has risen to the top of his career helping Dave Dawson run for President of the United States. As chief campaign strategist, he is rarely home with his wife, Melanie, and their fifteen-year old daughter, Sophie.

Melanie, author and speaking advocate of protecting children in a sexualized environment, has shut down emotionally and sexually toward her husband due to his absence as she hides secrets of her past life growing up in the political DC scene.

While stumping in New Hampshire, Will gives Melanie the ultimatum to either go to a Christian marriage counselor or get a divorce. His wife fearfully acquiesces, forever wanting to bury her abusive upbringing while she over-protects their teenage daughter.

As Will and Melanie try to be strong politically for their presidential candidate, they question their loyalty and love as secrets are unleashed during counseling. Not wanting to relive her past, Melanie will do anything to protect her daughter from repeating her mistakes.

Meanwhile, Will’s sister must make the right choices for her indiscretions, political stances, and faith in God when she meets a member of the anti-establishment MoveIn group that challenges her beliefs.

With side stories of a voracious political co-worker, a hedonistic newspaper journalist, and an electronic hacker who releases medical information, Will and Melanie try to keep their marriage in tact while the rest of the country is shown a compassionate but human presidential candidate.

Although there is a plethora of characters with secret sins of their own, this fast and furious read shows God’s love, forgiveness, and guidance through dealing and over-coming wrong choices made. With an inconclusive ending, there could be a sequel to this political and emotional drama of people balancing their professional lives that uncover their tattered pasts.
