Just because these desserts look delicate and there are a lot of them doesn’t mean they have to take a lot of time. These sweet treats are easy to put together and are sure to satisfy,” Christina Dymock writes at the beginning of her book, One Dirty Bowl: Fast Desserts, Faster Cleanup.

At one hundred and thirty-six pages, this square bounded paperback targets those interested in making quick desserts, using only one bowl that needs cleaning.  Small to full page color photographs of completed concoctions grace less than half the pages. The ending includes measurement equivalents, index, promotions of two other books written by the author, and her biography along with two reviews.

With almost ninety recipes for sweets, six chapters cover small treats, brownies, bars, breads, cookies, candies, cakes, cobblers, and pies. After a title giving the recipe name and serving size, an italicized paragraph explains the dish. Randomly adding a photograph, ingredients are listed in theme-colored side-bars with preparations and directions in paragraph form, covering one to two pages each.

From two to sixteen ingredients, all recipes require only one large bowl to prepare something delightfully sweet, occasionally listing alternative variations.

Highlights for these tasty treats range from mini bundt cakes with pears, white chocolate cherry delights, best-ever chocolate fudge brownies, to-die-for pecan bars, chocolate chocolate chip bread, and butter rum bread to snap-and-crackle cookies, paper bag cookies, honey caramels, upside-down mounds, hummingbird sheet cake, and blender pumpkin pie.

Chocolate Graham Cracker Cookies is a simple example that serves thirty-six. Its ingredients are butter, sugar, brown sugar, graham cracker crumbs, cocoa, flour, baking soda, salt, egg and vanilla. “As far as cookies go, these guys are the cat’s meow! Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In a medium mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugars until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Add the graham cracker crumbs, cocoa, flour, baking soda, salt, egg, and vanilla. Mix well. Drop by rounded spoonfuls onto an ungreased cookies cookie sheet. Bake for 9-11 minutes, or until set.”

With minimal clean up and quick preparation time, these dessert recipes can be whipped up and served without too much cleanup in the kitchen. As a good book for dessert lovers, many chefs will not only enjoy fast-making treats, they will love the accolades for such delicious sweets.
