There’s a lot more involved with Tess’s abduction than we originally thought. I know you’re scared, but I need you to trust me. I need to get you somewhere safe,” Emily is told in Lisa Harris’s novel, Fatal Exchange.

Second in the Southern Crimes series, this three hundred and twenty-one page paperback targets those who like romantic suspense in a current-day setting. With no profanity or lewd sex, the violence mentioned would be appropriate for teenage to adult readers. The first chapter of the third book in the series is included at the end. This reader wishes all pronouns of God were capitalized for reverence.

In this tome that continues from the first book based in Atlanta, Emily Hunt’s brother, a policeman, has been killed, and she and her family still believe Mason, another cop and Michael’s best friend, is fully to blame.

As a teacher at a local private academy, Emily has befriended Rafael Cerda, a smart eighteen year old senior whose younger brother is kidnapped by a drug cartel demanding ransom money.

When Rafael’s mother is also taken, the student holds several classmates hostage in a classroom, including Emily and her thirteen year old niece. Mason, who had been nurturing Rafael for several years, tries to intercede as a negotiator to dissolve the volatile situation.

Emily’s ex-fiance who is also on the police force also gets involved in the hunt to track down those behind the kidnappings when someone near and dear to Emily is taken. As Mason tries to protect Emily from being involved in the case, both must call on God for faith and mercy while they consider a possible future romance.

Predictable for the first half of the book, there are a few twists and turns as the police team determine the who and why behind the kidnappings along with an explanation of the increase in demand money. With strained romantic conversations, Emily and Mason deal with the hurts of their pasts as they learn forgiveness and grace.

Although the ending is anticlimactic with the last chapter promoting the sequel, readers may like the happily-ever-after feeling of the good guys winning and the bad guys losing in this fast-reading tale.
