Artificial Intelligence has changed the cultural landscape.” It is predicted according to experts such as Ray Kurzweil, inventor and futurist that within about 15 years, the average desktop computer will have a mind of its own. Imagine what will happen if your computer becomes your intelligence equal. Questions such as the weather forecast, knowing your private and deepest feelings and concerns and asking it for advice as your computer becomes you special personal friend.

Let’s take apart the present century and divide it into four quarters; The first quarter of this century the author relates the computational capacity of a thousand dollars computer device in 1999 will be equal to that of the “Human brain. It is referring to raw computing power, not a computer that will emulate a human brain.”

Next he states AL will find man specific smart applications. Imagine computer being able to translate telephone calls, transcribe speech into computer text allowing deaf people to comprehend our words. What about developing robotic leg prostheses that will allow a paraplegic to walk. In the second half of this century he relates that computer implants will be designed and available for direct communication to the brain and will be available. Imagine what will happen if the rise in AI creates a need for Robot Rights. The third quarter advances and the fourth quarter advances are remarkable: What would happen if at the end of the fourth quarter machines had the same equal legal status as humans?

Each chapter brings to light another advance and the technology related to AI. In Chapter Two the author relates the beginning of AI. In Chapter 2 he states that the concept of intelligence machines and AI beings dates back to ancient times. By the late 1990’s into the early part of this century, AI began a resurgence finding new applications in logistics, data mining and even medical diagnosis. Chapter 3 focuses on Moore’s Law and Chapter 4 The Rise of Intelligent Agents. After reading these first four chapters you begin to wonder if Humans are going to be needed or will become expendable. Del Monte defines intelligence agent as “ a system that interacts with its environment and takes calculated actions to achieve its goal.” Imagine intelligent agents that can join together or are combined to form multi-agent systems. What will happen if factories, businesses and machines are so automated that they will not need humans to run them? Are we a threat to them or them to us?

Chapter Five raises many questions as the author relates information about Raw Processing Power Equals a Human Brain. Explaining in detail the importance of software he relates what we are asking AI to accomplish when trying to emulate human intelligence: His research explains this in ten specific areas: Reasoning, knowledge, planning, learning, language, moving, manipulation, vision, social intelligence and creativity.  He continues with a discussion of the Turing Test. There are several challenges: Optimal, Strong superhuman, Superhuman, Par-human. AI is able to meet each of the challenges in this test. To learn the full explanation and discussion read Chapter Five. What are Self-Learning Machines and is followed by Affective Machines in Chapters 6 and 7. Imagine a computer that can detect and recognize emotional information. What about one that can develop or stimulate emotion in machines? Speech affect detection and Facial affect-detection: Carl Herman Hjortsjo began to develop a facial action coding system and in 1972 Ekman suggested six categories of Emotions: anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness and surprise. In 1990 he added more: amusement, contempt, contentment, embarrassment and several more. What about a computer or AI that can detect Gestures? What is the implication that an intelligent machine that can replicate a human brain will be a mind, feel emotions and be conscious and even self-aware! This is quite profound! In Chapter 8 he expands on self-aware machines and Chapter 9 when Intelligent Machines Equal Human Brains. 

The discipline of A-Life recognizes three areas of AI Life: Soft, Hard and Wet. The author focuses on the first two. Soft meaning from software based simulation and hard from hardware based simulation. There is no definition at present of life that that considers any A-life simulations but that view is starting to change as AI comes closer to emulating a human brain. Referring once again to Kurzwell the author states that he predicts that intelligence machines will have equal legal status with humans by the year 2099. Experiments he states suggest that robots can learn the human traits of greed and maybe even that of self-preservation. He continues to discuss Robot rights and what would happen if these SAMs become hostile to humans. He concludes by stating that SAMs should not be afforded equal rights of humans. Would that cause or invite an intelligence explosion? Think about it! 

The topic of Singularity covers chapter 11, 13 and 14. Chapter 15 discusses in depth Will Humankind’s Evolution Merge with Intelligent Machines: note the term Cyborg, Will SAMs Replace Humankind? Do they present a clear a present danger to humankind? Should humans or humankind be more proactive and control the intelligence explosion. He includes for your entertainment or to give readers something to really think about: Meeting with a fan Club Member in 2041 and meeting with a second one in 2099.
