At one hundred and twenty-eight numbered pages, this paperback targets those interested in making meals using a slow cooker. With no photographs of completed creations, it is a collection of quick to prepare, but slow to cook recipes. A topical index is included along with a promotion of another one of the author’s books and her short biography.
After the writer’s personal preface, there is a quick history of these marvelous appliances originally named the Crock-Pot by Rival in 1970. Five tips follow reminding readers to use a tight-fitting lid that is not to be opened, that the pot should be a half to two-thirds full, to thaw meats in advance, and to avoid putting the unit on a cold surface or in cold water due to possible breakage.
Divided into six sections, the book contains ninety-five recipes involving beef, pork, chicken, casseroles, chili, soups, stews, vegetable side dishes, breakfasts, and desserts. At one page per dish, the title and ingredients are listed in red print while the simple instructions to prepare the meal for the slow cooker are in paragraph form at the bottom of the page. Slower cooker icons are on each page showing how many servings per dish.
Some of the delightful concoctions include Porcupine Meatloaf, Cola Pot Roast, Sweet and Tangy Pork and Kraut, Italian Pasta Sauce with Beans, Cranberry Chicken, Chicken Stuffing Casserole, Chuck Wagon Stew, Spicy Split Pea Soup, Cabbage and Apple Casserole, Lemony Steamed Artichokes, Overnight Oatmeal, and Apple Crisp Crunch.
Rudimentary in design but packed with a multitude of tasty meals, this book is good for quick decision-making when a slow cooker is used. With simple instructions and many recipes with ten or fewer ingredients, this is a go-to source for a creative dish you can throw together, ignore for hours, and enjoy when ready.
