I know you are going through a difficult time right now and you think running away is the answer to your problem, but try to have faith that the humans will do what is best for you,” Tara reminds Toby in G.A. Whitmore’s story, A Place to Call Home – Toby’s Tale.

This two hundred and ninety-two page paperback targets those who enjoy rescue dog stories, especially saving a special dog from physical abuse. Although two minor swear words are included, the book would be ideal for middle-school to teenaged children based on its writing style.

Reflecting love and redemption, this tome surrounds the life of Toby, a rare white German Shepherd who is part wolf. Written with italics from Toby’s perspective and normal font for human interaction, two sides of the story are reflected.

Born on the Bailey Farm by a breeder who prides himself with purebred animals, Toby and his sister disappoint the man who cannot make a profit off their strange wolf-blood white fur. With his wife and son’s objections, the breeder demands Toby and his sister be destroyed.

The breeder’s wife feels compassion for both puppies and instructs their farmhand take the white dogs to a shelter. Unable to get to his destination, the man leaves the two dogs in their crate by a dumpster in a nearby town.

A young family of four immediately discovers the furry animals, with the children enthralled by their new pets. When the dogs acclimate to their new home, unfortunately the female gets attacked by a neighbor’s dog.

Tragedy increases when Toby befriends an old dog which tries to protect him, dying in the process. When the puppy is physically abused by one of his owners, his trust for humans falters and he yearns to escape the turmoil.

Only when a new family finds Toby at a shelter does his faith in people return, feeling loved again. Through dreams with those who have loved him, he is encouraged to rise above the angst and accept the love mankind offers.

While the book promotes responsibility, care, and bonding with man’s best friend, dog lovers can relate to the benefits of pet ownership and humane societies that protect animals.
