“I’ve been a Christian for almost twenty-five years, and I haven’t accomplished anything. I can’t point to one single person that I’ve had an impact on, even in my own family,” Katie reflects in Besty Duffey and Laurie Myers’s novel, The Shepherd’s Song: A Story of Second Chances.

At two hundred and forty pages, this hardbound book targets those who like Christian fiction that blends Biblical application with lives seeking salvation, forgiveness, and grace. With no profanity, discussions of abuse may not be apropos for immature readers.

Authored by two sisters, this tome dissects the Bible’s famous Psalm 23 into fourteen chapters, encompassing its cherished words written on a simple piece of paper that flows through several hands around the world and back. Broken down, line by line, individuals find redemption as it correlates to their relationship to God.

When Kate McConnell writes out the psalm and gives it to her rebellious college-aged son, Matt, she forgets to retrieve it from his wool coat when it is taken to the cleaners. Instead, her life changes drastically when she is involved in deadly car accident, rushing her to the hospital. There her husband that is used to fixing everything and her son must wait patiently to see if she lives or dies.

Yet the paper is not forgotten as one person after another reads it, spiritually changing them due to its powerful words and message. If it is not the young employee at the cleaners who wants to make his mark, a soldier in Iraq dealing with death, or an art restorer in Paris who has lost his way, it is a pick-pocket in London missing his father, a suicidal man in on a mission, an Italian olive grove owner with a grudge, or a rich American questioning what is important in life.

Each individual who touches the well-handled sheet makes a life changing decision as it finds its way back to its owner, where Kate finally sees how she has touched so many with her simple, unassuming life.

Although predictable and lacking the concise plan of eternal salvation, the writers hone in on the beautiful psalm that shows God is always there, never to leave anyone that trusts in Him. This allegory-by-chapter would make a great in-depth group study.
