The two most important days of your life are the day you were born and the day you figure out why. You were born to know your Creator and to do life with Him; when you realize this, things will begin to make sense and your life will resonate with real meaning and purpose,” Deborah Buckingham writes at the beginning of her book, Nourishments – Food for the Soul.

At three hundred and sixty-three pages, this padded hardbound book targets those interested in a daily devotional promoting to be closer to God. After acknowledgements, a letter from the author, a list of names of God, and a preface, two hundred and sixty devotions follow, ending with a thirty page glossary. Versions of the Bible include NLT, NIV, NKJV, ESV, KJV, HCSB, AMP, NRSV, NASB, and The Message.

Meant to be read five days a week with the weekend for other in-depth studies, each one-to-two page devotional has a theme with written-out verses highlighted. Several paragraphs follow, sometimes ending with a short recap or reminder. Bold words are discussed more thoroughly in the glossary.

Concentrating on focusing on the Almighty, some titled themes are The Perfect Sacrifice, Transformed, Deep Roots of Faith, Yeshua Calls, The Lord is Near, Stand Firm, Gifted to Serve, Hopeful Anticipation, Develop Endurance, Give God Control, Don’t Quit, The Incense of Prayer, The Land of Meribah, and Table Manners.

One example is Unfailing Love, listing two verses from Psalms 94 about God loving us continually. The three paragraphs talk about our Omnipresent Protector and Provider. Although we tend to doubt His love, we should thank, see, and always go to Him as He will never fail us. The word “Omnipresent” is in bold font, thus in the Glossary, explained as being in all places at all time with more Bible verses referenced.

When this first time author tucked encouraging notes in her children’s school lunches, the idea sprouted later in her life for this Biblically-based book that is also available in audio format.

With so many devotionals available, this spiritual daily “bread” is unique, not mentioning any of the author’s personal feelings, experiences, or thoughts as it mixes Scripture with everyday living. Pure and simple, its nourishing words draw the reader to yearn to be closer to Christ.
