Will you get heavenly minded so that you can be of some earthly good? Will you allow your heart to be so captured by the splendor, beauty, and awesomeness of the God of heaven that your life really changes? Will you allow that motivation, attitude, and focus to grip your heart so that you make a decision to serve other people, on this earth, for the Kingdom?” Steve Berger asks in his book, Between Heaven and Earth: Finding Hope, Courage, and Passion Through a Fresh Vision of Heaven.

At one hundred and ninety-two pages, this paperback targets mainly Christian believers or those who want to learn more about eternity in heaven. After two pages of reviews, there is a foreword by Mark Rutland along with acknowledgements and an introduction. The main part of the book covers eleven chapters and ends with Bible study resources and notes.

As a senior pastor in Tennessee, Berger’s mindset about the afterlife was drastically altered when his nineteen year old son was killed in a car accident in 2009. Instead of dwelling on the tragedy, the writer looks forward to the blessed day when he will join his son again in heaven.

With most of us focusing on day-to-day living here on earth, Berger reminds us that if we concentrate on our eternity with God and our “hands are in the harvest” of helping others, we will become closer in our relationship to Him.

Referencing Abraham, Paul, Peter, and Jesus from the Bible along with authors such as Alcorn, C S Lewis, Graham, Spurgeon, and Tolkien to name a few, heaven is our real home and hope as we are sojourners in a foreign land. We should be hard-pressed or totally preoccupied about our eternal future.

Using Bible verses with some Greek meanings, the author reminds us that we will finally know things completely with our sinless, resurrected bodies. In heaven, we will create, hear music, worship, laugh, interact with animals, work, reign with Christ, and relate to God Himself.

Although there are no new concepts included in this short book, the idea that we should harvest by helping others here on earth is promoted and challenged to reap rewards when we are at home with the Lord.
