Norm Goldman, Publisher & Editor of Bookpleasures.com Interviews Neil David Schwartz, Author of What If Tomorrow Never Comes

Today, Bookpleasures.com is pleased to have as our guest Neil David Schwartz author of What if Tomorrow Comes.

Neil was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. He has been a California trial attorney since 1977. Neil served as trustee of the Los Angeles County Law Library and as an arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association in addition to the Los Angeles County Superior Court. He also served on the Board of Directors for Abraham Joshua Heschel Day School for twelve years. Neil has been selected by Los Angeles Magazine as one of the “Super Lawyers” of Los Angeles for the years 2008-2013.

Norm:

Good day Neil and thanks for participating in our interview

How did you decide you were ready to write What if Tomorrow Never Comes?

Neil:

After witnessing both the unexpected death of my wife and daughter within three months of each other, I was asked by several people how I was still functioning? I responded that a therapist had recommended keeping a journal. This resulted in 2000 pages of journaling. Numerous people suggested I write a book which might benefit others who have to walk the same stormy path of life. This inspired me to move forward with the project.

Norm:

What purpose do you believe your memoir serves and what matters to you about the memoir?

Neil:

I am hopeful that the memoir serves at least two purposes. First, while some things in life can never be changed, we can always try and change ourselves so as to adapt to the turbulent winds that sometimes chill our lives. The calm after the  storm which is where I currently reside, is a place to embrace and appreciate the moment. Once chaos is extricated from your life and you return to normalcy, take the opportunity to transform the mundane into grandeur.

The second purpose which the memoir hopefully serves is the message that we all can find the inner strength to overcome adversity and start a new chapter of living. Part of that new chapter is never forgetting where you have been so as to give hope and strength to others. What matters to me about the memoir is that if will stand as a tribute to Joanne and Amy.

Norm:

What was the time-line between the time you decided to write your book and publication? What were the major events along the way?

Neil:

I starting writing the book shortly after Amy’s death. It took two years to complete the book and have it published. Upon completion of the book I was blessed with meeting a wonderful woman and we are now happily married.

Norm:

What was the most difficult part of writing your book? How did you overcome the difficulty?

Neil:

The most difficult part of writing my book necessitated a return to a period of my life which was a living hell. I overcame the difficulty by focusing upon memorializing  the two women who I loved and were my life . As I forged forward I was fueled by purpose of life and actually found the experience cathartic.

Norm:

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your memoir?

Neil:

Looking out the rear view mirror , I guess we conclude we always could of done better. Nonetheless, I told my story and if I’m lucky it may touch a heart or inspire someone to look at the world differently.

Norm:

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in writing the memoir?

Neil:

Even a Greek tragedy needs a little sugar. My memoir is inherently a very depressing but true story. I was surprised that I was able to tactfully integrate some humor into the story. After all isn’t laughter one of the most powerful antidotes to sadness.

Norm:

Do you hear from your readers much? What kinds of things do they say?

Neil:

I have received lots of positive, heartwarming and gratifying feedback from readers. One reader who is eighty four said , “this was the saddest dam book I ever read”. Fortunately she also said it was one of the most loving and meaningful books she ever read.

Norm:

Where can our readers find out more about you and What if Tomorrow  Never Comes?

Neil:

Readers can visit  MY AMAZON AUTHOR'S PAGE or MY WEBSITE

Norm:

What is next for Neil David Schwartz? Are there any other books on the horizon?

Neil:

I am currently working on a new project which is a biography of a local Los Angeles politician.

Norm:

As this interview draws to a close what one question would you have liked me to ask you? Please share your answer.

Neil:

Neil, in retrospect would you have taken two years of your life to write this memoir? You bet I would Norm.  However, maybe in one year?

Norm:

Thanks again and good luck with all of your future endeavors
