With this heartfelt gesture, he’d made a sharing plan.
This little boy was actually a gallant poodle man.
And with his caring gesture, Deja felt her spirits lifted.
In the skill of helping others, he was obviously so gifted.”
Toni Tuso Faber promotes the value of full service animals in her children’s book, The Full Service Poodle.

Tenth in “The Poodle Tales” series, this hardbound book of unnumbered, twenty-four pages targets readers ages four to nine years old. With no profanity or scary scenes, the series encourages positive life-lessons such as sharing, helping others, determination, and overcoming insecurities seen through the eyes of poodles. Illustrator Rudd’s designs are simplistic and easy to understand, covering the complete page with vibrant colors. With no author biography or website information, no other books by the writer are included.

In this rhyming tome, a cute black and white poodle with a black bow participates in the last act of the talent show. Not being very active, he feels he has no exciting talent like the other service dogs. Right before his act begins, he notices Deja, a white girl poodle, missing.

When he finds Deja, she sadly states she is not in the show, so the black pup invites her to share his act with him; she agrees. The canines show they can retrieve items, change television channels, get their food bowls and treats, open cabinets, and enact dialing nine-one-one in an emergency.

After the doorbell rings, the boy dog notices the newspaper is missing. He sees it outside under a low chair on the lawn and climbs under it but gets stuck. Deja comes to his rescue by pulling and tugging the animal out from under the chair. When the show is over, all the other dogs proclaim the two had the best act. Deja proves she is brave and smart saving her friend in a crisis.

While showing the importance of needed service animals and some of the tasks they can do, this charming book promotes thinking about and helping others in need. Since a portion of each sale goes to charity, Faber’s concentration on teaching moral lessons shines through in this furry, friendly story.
