If you want to learn to sew, or if you teach sewing to beginners, rejoice! Katie Lewis has put together the perfect instructions in Simple Sewing: 30 Fast and Easy Projects for Beginners. This is a book that even people who are brand new to the craft can understand and use. It also includes the sewing templates, so you can get right to work on one of 30 great projects.

I teach sewing to 9 and 10-year old girls. What I’ve found is that most of the so-called “quick and easy” projects are too complicated. For example, one of the mothers gave me a “Sew Simple” pattern that looked good. Most of it was easy, but there was one major section I actually had to do for the girls, because it was too complex and difficult. If you’re a beginner, you know what I mean. It seems like the “easy” rating means “easy if you’re already an expert.” Not so with this book!

All of the projects are do-able for those who are new to sewing. What’s more, every page is a visual delight. The instructions are clear, readable, and include large color photos and diagrams along with the written text.

Simple Sewing includes something for everyone. The projects are divided into six categories: accessories, home, celebrations, baby, school days, and toys. The introduction is called, “Before You Begin,” and it tells you what supplies you’ll need along with information about fabric, stitches, terms, and techniques.

If you want to begin with accessories, you can choose from a cute hair bow, a practical tote bag (who can’t use a tote bag?), a sunglasses case, a stylish headband, and—my personal favorite—the Scripture bag. But in reality, you can begin with any project in the book. Jump right into decorating your home with reversible place mats or stitch up a Christmas stocking.

There are good choices for gifts, too, such as the reversible bib, pocket hand warmers, or the chalk mat and eraser. If you’re teaching young ones, what better than to have fun crafting a toy they can play with afterwards?

After you’ve mastered the basics, you can choose options to personalize your projects.

Author and seamstress Katie Lewis graduated with a degree in home and family living from Brigham Young University. Her readers can keep in touch with her through her popular blog, “The Red Kitchen,” where she continues to publish fun and easy tutorials.

I highly recommend this book for students, parents, and teachers. It also makes a lovely gift.
