Some were rigid and long, while others were smooth and round. I was so delighted with the assortment of seashells that I had found! There were white, brown, yellow, and even orange shells galore. Each of them so beautiful, they were so easy to adore!” Lilly exclaims in Easter Huggins Anderson’s book for children, Seashells for Lilly.

The author targets this unnumbered twenty-four page paperback booklet towards young ones who enjoy the ocean and seashells while playing at the beach. With no profanity or violence, it would best be read aloud to preschool or beginner readers due to some complicated wording. Illustrator JZ Sargario’s brightly painted drawings are on the left sides of the glossy pages, while rhyming sentences are written against stark white backgrounds on the right sides. The ending offers a free downloadable audio version link.

In this short story, one day Lilly and her dad visit the beach to find seashells. While he retrieves the cooler from the car, the precocious girl picks up her bucket and starts to explore, finding various seashells in the sand. Not only are the shells small, medium, and large, they exhibit different shapes, textures, and colors. Lilly collects so many of them that her bucket overflows.

After a while, the young girl sits down and ponders the beautiful clouds in the blue sky and the deep blue ocean. She also walks along the shore, noticing the few creatures that live in the shallow water. She observes footprints and a dog’s paw prints left in the wet sand, only to be washed away by the water.

When it is time to go, her father calls her to leave. Lilly is happy she collected so many beautiful seashells to take home. She loves looking at the beautiful creations on land, sea, and air that surround her.

Although the book’s cover and two illustrations inside are identical with the artwork simplistic, a visual calmness encompasses the story, showing the beauty of nature. Having all sentences rhyming their endings, children will enjoy hearing the book read out loud aides in the sing-songy format like ocean waves lapping on the book’s beach.
